Meghan and Harry celebrated Heritage Day in the Bo Kaap area, embracing the rainbow of cultures, beliefs, and traditions of the South African people. Their first stop was a visit to the Auwal mosque, the oldest mosque in the country. Afterwards, Meghan and Harry visited locals for a cup of tea – a very sweet visit to learn more about the local culture.
Meghan wore an elegant olive shirt dress for the afternoon’s events. As a sign of respect, she wore a headscarf to the most in a simple, soft cream fabric. Her nude flats finished a look that was minimalistic, respectful, and effortlessly chic.

What did you think of Meghan’s look for the start of the South African Tour?

I appreciate the respect Meghan shows by going ultra-cover-up but not sure it works with this style. The fabric and its colour look lovely, but I think I prefer a shirtwaister shorter than this, I’m not sure it’s quite so natural full length. and I think Meghen suffers further waist-bunching with the wide belt and yards of skirt fabric.
The shawl is pretty around her face but quite bulky on top of the heavy effect of the dress and flats seem to let the whole thing fade away altogether. It’s also a minor inconsistency perhaps that the cover-up is so extensive, but doesn’t include hair as well, which might at least have been away from the face. That’s three outfits now with problems re bunching fabric and awkward fit, and it’s becoming obvious she’s on a learning curve with that strangest of dress categories, formal royal day wear. I think it took Duchess Kate several years experimentation to find any formula to suit her.

I do not love this. The skirt is way too voluminous on her and swamps her. It reminds me of the olive sack she wore to watch polo with Archie.
Kate says
I think this looks like a Cuyana scarf.

Wow, that is feather-lite cashmere! Almost translucent 🙂

We’ve reached out to the brand to confirm – because we didn’t see any identifiable markings on the scarf, it could be anything. We like this as a choice though since we know Meghan loves the brand, and it would have a super soft, elegant drape to it like the Cuyana one does. We will update when we get a reply!

This one isn’t my favorite look thus far, but I certainly understand what she was going for here. Which was to be covered up out of respect for the people and place they were visiting. So I must applaud the intention.
Someone mentioned they thought the scarf may be Cuyana. I think that’s a fantastic guess and I won’t be at all surprised if it is confirmed as such. I believe she’s worn Cuyana before and their brand ethics would certainly be in line with the typesof companies she generally chooses to wear.
Ava Pittman says
There is a lot of fabric floating around with this dress, for the event I assume she was more focused on dressing for respect and not so much the fashion part of her outfit. First of all I thought it was the dress she wore to the Polo, but closer inspection obviously not, wrong shade and different fabric.
Pam says
This is too much dress for someone as petite as Meghan. And, once again, it looks ill-fitting in the waist area.
However, the color of the dress is really on trend.
