Meghan's Mirror

Chronicling the Chic, Classic and Casual Style Duchess of Sussex (the former Meghan Markle)

September 26, 2019

Royal Tour South Africa Recap – Part One

What a whirlwind of excitement – and fashion – in the Cape Town portion of the Royal Tour South Africa! We saw casual Meghan, glamorous Meghan, and of course mummy Meghan with Archie even appearing to meet Archbishop Tutu.

@SussexRoyal

With Meghan (and Archie) now enjoying several days rest before moving on to the Johannesburg portion of the Tour commences next Tuesday, we thought it would be fun to get your thoughts on the looks of the Tour so far and to recap the extremely affordable pieces Meghan has highlighted thus far that you can add to your own closets for a little Markle Sparkle… South African Tour Edition!

Classic Airport Style

Day one saw Meghan and Harry arrive into Cape Town where we got a glimpse of Meghan’s chic airplane style (seriously, how does she *always* look so good getting off an airplane?)

Meghan’s airport look featured pieces that we are sure we will see in her wardrobe time and time again. The inclusion of the $155 ‘Editor’ Slingback flat from Everlane in her airplane choices and the $345 Cuyana Wool Cashmere wrap coat may not be in everyone’s budget, but they certainly are quality, reasonably affordable basics that would be staple pieces in your wardrobe for years to come.

Casual Basics Chic

We saw casual Meghan on this portion of the Royal Tour, including on a trip to Monwabisi Beach, where Meghan wore several very affordable repeats.

With a utilitarian $79 Madewell Tote, $59 Le Specs sunnies, $118 Madewell Jacket and $65 J.Crew Shirt, it was a masterclass in finding basics that work well, and then sticking to your style formula.

Casual Basics Chic

Glamorous Meghan made her Tour début for a solo event to Work In Progress, where we finally got to see a piece we’d seen glimpses of before in it’s full glory.

We continue to fall in love with Meghan’s Everlane choices, including this Essential GoWeave jumpsuit. She paired it with a spectacular, dramatic pair of $215 gold earrings from Gas Bijoux.

We loved the earrings so much that we created our own MirrorMeg version… Which we’ve linked in the photo above for a very affordable $20 MirrorMeg option!

We’re very excited to see how the second half of the Tour – in Johannesburg – plays out, and what fashion excitement lays in store for us. If you missed any details of the Tour, we have ALL the style details listed either in event-by-event posts, or you can check out ALL of the style in one spot.

A poll — weekend treat!! My favourite so far is the jumpsuit, Meghan judged the whole thing just right and it’s a while since we’ve enjoyed such a nice fit on her. As I’ve often found before, even the outfits I didn’t like on first acquaintance don’t look so bad now. As I’ve seen more photos of the Staud I’ve begun to see where it’s coming from, if that makes sense. I think after initial shock I began to see the beauty of Meg, both within and without, and that softens my judgement. It often annoys me I can’t do that at the outset! I nearly, everso nearly, snapped up the Madewell canvas tote, but still drew back cos I’m having eco shivers at the moment — the Greta effect — and I do have at least three already…

Hi Bertie, I know how you feel re: the canvas tote; while I already have a lovely Madewell tote that I just got a few months ago, I did just order and receive the John Lewis Smart Set tote only because it was part of Meghan’s Smart Works campaign. And I just order that Madewell jean jacket that Meghan wore. My closet, my credit card and mostly my husband were pretty happy while Meghan was on maternity leave because I didn’t buy any Meghan inspired items that quite frankly I really don’t Need. All that being said I do find that I wear all of my Meghan inspired pieces a lot because our styles are very similar so I guess I justify my spending with making sure I get my monies worth 🙂

I wouldn’t get too down on yourself for your initial judgements of Meghan’s outfits. We as humans are prone to being judgemental but it’s fantastic that you recognize that aspect of yourself and are working to change it, that makes you one step ahead of most. Personally, I find that when I don’t like and outfit or a particular item then I just don’t comment on that instead I find something positive to comment on such as her glow or the event itself. It seems that when I don’t write down or say my initial negative thought but focus on the positive it’s easier to let that negative thought/feeling go. Also, I feel that everyone these days is in such a rush to say something negative, sometimes under the guise of “keeping it real” or “being truthful” that the world won’t miss my one-more negative comment.

Hi Lauri, and thank you so much for kind and thoughtful response. I do try to do as you say and just focus on positives, agree that the last thing world needs is any more moaning online. And love your point about how good the royal items can turn out to be. For things I don’t Need they sure turn out to be Useful. That black M&S top Meghan wore to Brixton is a topper, so comfy and cosy in all those hard-to-reach places in winter, easy to wear yet with added dash of glamour in puffed sleeves — a case in point. Had some good tees off Kate too!

I loved the silk dress she wore with little Archie, it suited her beautifully. The fall and length of the dress was spot on and her shoes were the perfect choice. I love the subtle pieces of jewellery she has worn so far, No bare neckline or earlobes, simple, dainty but refined apart from the gold circle earrings, which I thought were fantastic. Wearing them with the jumpsuit was the perfect choice and she didn’t need any other accessory.

I have 2 favorite outfits from the first days of this tour; first would be the casual black jeans, white button up shirt and the jean jacket. This one speaks to me as an outfit that I do wear frequently and it does make me feel comfortable and effortlessly put together. The second outfit is the black jumpsuit. While I don’t think I’ll ever wear a jumpsuit, for reasons I went into a few posts ago, this outfit reminds me so much of my most favorite, the black velvet Givenchy dress and gold accessories that Meghan wore to the British fashion awards while she was pregnant with Archie. After her wedding ensemble that outfit will, I believe, always stand out for me as the most beautiful, most regal, most Meghan, most everything outfit I will ever see anyone wear. The simplicity of these two outfits just speak to me and Meghan’s confidence while wearing them inspires me to only wear items that make me feel that confident.

Brilliant reminder about that Givenchy stunner, I thought Meghan’s jumpsuit combo looked vaguely familiar!

I’m also loving the jumpsuit. I never wore one before so I’m going to give it a go…no more fear. I can’t wait for the next Meghan’s Mirror article which showcases her great style…it’s in the little things like the lilac flower she tucked behind her ears and the porcelain leaf earrings designed by a young South African from my hometown that I never heard of until now. Meghan and Archie arrived in Johannesburg a few hours ago… I am almost certain that Archie will be out in the public eye again when they meet Graca Machel…the widow of our beloved Nelson Mandela…Graca is a most stylish, beautiful and dignified woman. Extremely compassionate and kind. She has the best smile and I’m sure when the two meet, the love will be real. Can’t wait

Hello Cam. I’m also from SA from Cape Town to be exact and it’s been wonderful to see Meghan in my old hometown which will always be in my heart even after 21 years away. It’s been wonderful “getting to know” Meghan through her fashion because her choices speak volumes about who she is as a person and for me personally it’s wonderful to finally have a style icon worthy of the title in every way. I think she is an inspiration for all women, young and old and now especially for woman who have given birth this year. she’s keeping it real, thank heavens! for me personally, Kate was never someone I could relate to. How she got a washboard flat stomach in record breaking speed after each child is beyond me. All round I find Meghans’ style and look far more approachable and relatable, so for me this site is like a box of chocolates you can’t wait to open and devour a few. and of course you never know what you’re going to get…. Hope Meghan makes some more fabulous appearances and soon. After this South Africa tour it’s going to be tough not seeing her for a while!
