Meghan surprised us with an appearance at the Sentebale Polo Cup with Prince Harry today at the Royal County of Berkshire Polo Club. Harry was playing polo at the event, and Meghan and Harry posed with various of the assembled dignitaries at the event. One of our favourite photos is this one including Harry’s good friend Nacho Figureas and his wife Delfina.
Meghan handed out the winning trophy at the event – which in this case was to Harry and his team! She even gave Harry a kiss as congratulations.
Meghan’s look was fresh, and fun – and she was carrying an incredibly affordable clutch. We love the incorporation of the classic denim fabric to combat the heat in a chic and stylish way. Her easy messy bun made the look a little more casual – the only thing we would possibly change were the shoes. We’d have loved to see a pair of espadrilles or a stylish flat… But we loved the overall look nonetheless!

That clutch is on sales for $35 at JCrew. An absolute steal! Just grabbed one off their website.
Danielle says
This has to be one of Meghan’s most beautiful and feminine “casual” looks yet. Very simple and very classic. Love it!
Kristine says
I’ve been meaning to buy a “basket” clutch for summer and this is the perfect one! Snapped one up this morning 🙂 Thanks for the info!
Lisa says
As an avid JCrewer, I appreciate the clutch. That said, I’m not too crazy about the whole outfit. The individual pieces are nice, it’s just how everything is put together.
Deborah Lorenzen says
Yes I am a J Crew fan from way back! I love the basket clutch. I agree with Lisa that I don’t the pieces as an “outfit. I like the dress, clutch and pumps but not together. The shoes are way too dressy in my opinion for the frock and the occasion and the clutch just doesn’t go with the pink shoes.. I know she can’t wear sandals but this look cries out for a chunky heel sandal. I like the MM delicate jewelry vibe, but sometimes a simple dress needs a little “pop”, a cool bangle maybe?
Amy Bee says
Who said she can’t wear sandals?
Karen says
Love the dress but agree Lisa, something is off and I think it’s the shoes. It’s an informal dress and the shoes are formal. Finding an appropriate informal shoe would go a long way in complimenting the look. And I wish someone would give her a couple of Bobby pins.
OG SG says
I love the dress. I actually like these nude shoes because of the interesting design but agree that they are too formal for the look. Sandals would have made this look perfection and given that the queen is not there, I don’t see why she couldn’t wear them.
lawmom says
I love everything but the shoes, which seem a bit fussy for a casual event and denim dress. However, it’s an overall win from me.
elizabeth oconnell says
The shoes are problematic, a ballerina flat would have been better than heels if sandals are prohibited. Could use more/different accessories. Would have like to see chunky hoop earrings and/or cuff bracelet.
Madison Mile says
I also love the dress, it’s fit and color are nice for a summer outing. But I agree with some who have mentioned that the Aquazurra shoes (which I adore in and of themselves!) seemed slightly off. I know that open toed shoes may no longer be an option for Duchess Meghan at public events, but perhaps a nice wedge espadrille in an interesting color or with a modern detail may have been a better match.
As for the J Crew clutch, yes it’s very cute and at that sale price a steal…and normally I would have been right over to the site to purchase, but I have a very cute similar one from Michael Kors I got last summer, so I can’t justify it! 🙁
Ali says
Great outfit except, as others have mentioned, the shoes are appropriate for polo.
Another day, another new pair of sunglasses. Seems a bit outrageous given that she has several similar pairs.
OG SG says
Do we know they are new? Actors get invited to gift suites at events all the time and are gifted tons of free swag, including sunglasses, so she might have a stockpile from her “previous life.” And anyway, I have probably 20 pairs of sunglasses, many of which are similar, because I lose and rediscover them on a regular basis. Of course, mine are not as pricey as hers. Thank you, TJ Maxx!
Nadine says
thank you…seems Meghans mirror has been invaded by critics now picking apart the price of her clothes based on tabloid reports!! I wish you would do your research. Do some research into the cost of the other Royals clothes, this was a high profile event and she dressed like ROYALTY. she wasn’t going to wear high street to satisfy a few people!! She isn’t British so her own high street while she was in Toronto was a well paid actress with endorsements so let her wear her birks and other high end stuff, thats what she always wore.
Imogen says
She is in the process of obtaining British citizenship, represents Britain as a member of the British royal family and is partially funded by British taxpayers, so I don’t think expecting her to show support for the British fashion industry and the British high street is at all unreasonable.
Nadine says
She has supported British and she will continue to do so. Gosh give her a break… she’s been a royal for 2 months..all the royal engagements she has attended so far have been high profile ( trooping the color, Royal ascot, a royal tour, appearances with the queen..twice) . Take that into consideration. Please don’t included her jewellery and wedding dresses because thats just petty. Every other senior female royal was wearing bespoke expensive designer clothes to these engagements too!! why is she supposed to wear high street to those engagements and not them?? Besides Harry is no dummy and neither is Charles, she has been given a clothing budget and she has advisors. So please maybe next time remember that when we see kate in the same bespoke Alexander Mcqueen dress in yet another color ,lets remember those things are expensive as much as $3000 to $4000 too!!!
Azia Forrest-Taylor says
Aww, I didn’t love this look. Since it was a surprise visit, I wonder if she was rushed? Love the aquazurra pumps, but they didn’t go with the dress or purse.
SSM says
It’s a win for me but not a home run. I agree that there would be a better shoe for this dress; there are so many gorgeous neutral sandals out there, wedge or otherwise, and I’d have loved to see some. The earrings are pretty and simply and let her smile stand out, along with her beauty. Cute clutch, I ordered one this morning to take to the next wedding I’m attending!
Imogen says
Stilettos again! This was the time to wear something more, comfortable. casual and grass-friendly..
Must every dress be £2k plus? Yes, the dress is nice but the British high street is full of lovely summer dresses at the moment…
OG SG says
I do have to agree that the cost of her clothes is getting a bit ridiculous. I know she hasn’t had that many appearances so it may be too soon for a rewear but she could mix in some less expensive clothing, particularly with day dresses. And while I love this dress, it doesn’t exactly scream “expensive high fashion” to me. You could have told me it cost $300 and I would have believed it. I am sort of of the opinion if you are going to spend that kind of money, it should be something special, like eveningwear.
Nadine says
Remember the 6000 pound hand painted silk dress kate wore to watch william play polo??? Oh please please please!!!!
Smithy says
I think the reason why people would like to see Meghan wear more high street is that Kate very often mixes both and certainly repeats. Although it’s too early to expect everything to be repeated, I think the endless list of designer and bespoke pieces makes her appear exclusive, despite her wedding and her previous charitable causes making her look inclusive. Also, Kate will one day be the future queen, so there will be plenty of opportunities for repeats at the sort of functions she will be attending, for Meghan it might be more limited. I personally like this dress and think it would look great when she goes on tour to Australia and New Zealand in October but it would be nice to see more high street, as she now dresses as a representation of Britain, not just herself.
Nadine says
If i had a dollar for every time I hear kate would be future queen consort i would be wearing a bespoke dress daily!! Your implication that Meghan won’t has cause to re-wear her bespoke clothes as a senior royal and commonwealth leaders wife doesn’t make sense?! Meghan is WORTH every penny they spend on her, she isn’t a second class royal . Just because she is out ranked by kate doesn’t mean she isn’t entitled to nice things, so i think thats the thinking you need to get out off. She will wear what she wears!!! Bed/good publicity , people will always find a reason to criticise/project their own expectations her no matter what she does. When she attends normal engagements and so on she will and has dressed accordingly.
Smithy says
I think you’ve misread my comment. I said that I would really like her to rewear this dress, particularly on the autum tour to Oceania, and there is definitely room for repeats on future engagements but her role is slightly different to that of Kate’s. For example, she won’t attend the Diplomatic Reception at the end of the year, and she may have a smaller role in State Visits. As the future head of state, William and his wife need to learn the diplomatic ropes when it comes to representing Britain on the global stage. Obviously Harry and Meghan will also represent Britain but they will never be monarchs, and the role of the monarch is unique. I think people were a bit shocked on the reported price of Meghan’s clothing because it added up to more than Kate spent in one year. Even if she didn’t pay full price for the items, the public will look at the optics of fashion and judge it that way. I’m not a Meghan hater, I’m merely trying to observe her fashion and it’s importance within the royal family’s representation of Britain. Again, it would be nice to see some more high street, I jumped up and down when she wore Marks and Spencer’s when she went to Brixton, but my critique of her fashion is not in anyway an endorsement of hate.
OG SG says
Trust me, I have complained about the prices of some of Kate’s outfits, too. Particularly the fact that she appears to have like 100 coats (not including the coatdresses) that all cost like $2000.
Imogen says
I wonder where they keep all the clothes and hats?
Grace says
I love the whole look. Luckily it’s something I can copy as I have a Uniqlo dress which looks exactly like this dress. I can even understand why she’s wearing heels as when it’s very hot my feet swell so terribly I have to stop wearing flat shoes. Heels help against swelling. Maybe she has similar problems?
Lauren Soso says
I like the topaz earrings and shoes as individual accessories, but, I also think these are the pieces that throw a fairly casual, fun, summer dress and basket clutch into the formal realm…it’s like this outfit is stuck between two words: Royal formal fashion and lovely lady enjoying a Summer polo match w. her man. The bun, for me, pushes it further into formal. Will always love MM regardless, but I do miss a cute sandal and dangly, dainty earrings or hoops to make things more unified in this look.
Patrice says
Interesting that you say the look is sort of in between two worlds – but, if you think about it, she’s doing sort of two jobs on this outing – presenting an award *and* being a supportive wife, watching her man play polo. She’s going to be photographed for the award presentation, so she’s gotta dress a bit more formally. A couple weeks back, didn’t she attend another polo match with Serena Williams & her husband in attendance? And didn’t she wear a casual dress with flats (sandals), like many people here wished she would have worn? Key points- it wasn’t an “official” event and she wasn’t expected to be photographed with him. I think Meghan is aware of how to dress herself for these different situations.
Kat says
Great dress and sunglasses.
Lauri says
This is such a sweet summer look and one I would definitely wear! I really like this silhouette on Meghan, as I’ve said before she can pull off this retro look without veering off into costume land which in my opinion is a wonderful skill. I’m also liking the blush/nude shoes she’s been pairing with darker dresses, I love the contrast as much as I love the monochromatic look she rocks so well.
I’d like to dip my toe gently into this discussion on clothing costs for Meghan, personally I would bet money that the royals don’t pay full retail for any of their clothing especially bespoke pieces. On a whole the royal family is known to be rather “tight” with their money and they receive discounts on the cars they drive so why not their clothing? Also, Meghan is a wealthy woman in her own right and as we’ve seen before she has bought many of her pieces pre-wedding with her own funds. Lastly, Meghan is just starting to build her “royal working” wardrobe which necessitates buying pieces that can and I’m sure will be worn again. Personally I believe that the media, who seems to have taken a dislike to Meghan, is continuing to dream up stories in order to stoke the fires of the anti-Meghan brigade. So while these types of articles can be entertaining or frustrating, I would take their “truthfulness” with a large grain of salt.
Patrice says
I appreciate everyone’s comments & insights. That said – I think the shoes are absolutely FABULOUS and work very well with the outfit. I also think what people may be missing is that at events where Meghan knows she will be photographed next to Harry, she needs to wear heels tall enough to offset the considerable height difference between them. She’s fairly petite next to him without heels, I’m guessing, since we really haven’t seen them in photos where she isn’t wearing high heels. Just an observation, thanks. Love this site!
Imogen says
In the first photos of them as a couple, taken at the Invictus Games, she wore flats, with jeans and a shirt. She walked alongside Harry and they looked great together.
Patrice says
Hello, Imogen,
I agree with you – they did look super happy together! I might argue -kindly- that it was a very casual, albeit high-profile event where they were photographed “informally” – walking & doing “stuff” – not together in a two-shot or lined up with other folks.
ps – I think in the Prince Louis christening picture Meghan was wearing a non sky-high heel. (Boy, I’m really way too into this stuff… lol!)
