Today, Meghan attended The WellChild Awards, which “celebrates the inspirational qualities of the UK’s seriously ill children and young people, along with those who go that extra mile to make a difference to their lives”. The Awards were held at the Lancaster Hotel in London.
Harry and Meghan met with the winners and their families before the ceremony, before presenting an award for the Most Inspirational Child.
Meghan’s look was unsurprisingly chic, but many were surprised to see Meghan opt for a trouser suit for tonight’s event. She loves a menswear inspired style, and stuck to her fashion roots for the WellChild Awards.

What did you think of Meghan’s look for the WellChild Awards? You can get more details about today’s event in this round up video:
I love this look on Meghan and would wear this myself all the time! I’m really liking the slightly flared pants, it’s one of my favorite styles and I’m thrilled to see her wearing the earrings her grandmother-in-law gave her!!
I have to admit I’m of two minds about tonight’s outfit, while I love it of course, I do wonder if all black was the right color to wear for an event attended by young, very sick children? On the other hand, this outfit ensures that all attention stays on the young recipients and this very worthy cause, instead of on what Meghan’s wearing, perhaps that’s what she intended.
One more thought…some time ago Princess Madeline of Sweden hosted a child’s party at the palace, she was dressed in full fairy tale princess mode and had little crowns and tiaras for the party guests. I would absolutely love seeing Meghan doing something like this, giving their young guests the full royal treatment for a few hours, I can only imagine the happy smiles and fond memories this would bring to the children, their parents and of course the Duchess.
Agree with you on the colour, I can’t decide either. Although I really like the cut of this suit and it’s a a nice change to see a top in a different material, I think it would be nice if she started to mix up her colours. There are some really nice different coloured trouser suits out there and I hope her style doesn’t become too predictable. Whether we like it or not, interesting clothes and jewellery worn on engagements often draw the public to the issue being explored in that engagement, so I just hope people don’t become too used to her fashion and therefore miss out on her philanthropic work.
I’m also really intrigued with the Princess Madeleine idea. Definitely something to consider (and she could possibly do it with Kate as well, hopefully that would shut all the silly media up!)
Great cut , agree on color. Still weary of the messy hair.
I do think a bright colour would of been nicer, bored with all the black.
Her hair is not messy. She’s non-white and as such her hair is never going to behave like yours.
I like the suit a lot…the cut is flattering and makes her look curvier than usual. I don’t like the top…the material looks cheap and I think she should have gone with any color other than black. Even white would have been an improvement although it would have been the ideal opportunity to add a pop of color.
I really like this look, it was nice to see a different neckline, the pants were hemmed to perfection and the overall fit seems spot on. I’m usually a black/grey/white person, but eventually would like to see a bit more color on her, perhaps a plum color for fall?
Love the outfit, bored with the black. My opinion plain ans simple XD
First, I commend the Duchess and Prince Harry for attending this wonderful philanthropic event. She looks happy and glowing too!
Now, on to the fashion! First, I NEED that camisole. It’s so pretty and has the perfect amount of detail to make a statement with her suit, Because she is so thin, these long boot cut pants look very nice on her, but they are hard to wear in general.
I don’t have a problem with her wearing black for this occasion, as I also think she was trying to reflect a more serious mood for the gravity of the situations the children were in, but I do see how some might feel black was not a particularly “happy” or “uplifting” shade.
P.S. As always, I’m team “messy bun” with the Duchess’ hair 🙂
Hi Madison, just when I think that black is going to be Meghan’s go to color for her engagements, she pulls a bright yellow dress like she did earlier in the summer. She likes to keep us on our toes! While I’m personally still going back and forth with tonight’s outfit, she does look gorgeous and darn her smile just lights up the room.
Where can I sign up for Team Messy Bun?!
Another black suit, black accessories…yawn. After watching the McCain memorial services where black was certainly appropriate; all black is just too austere and boring to me for this occasion. It is said that members of the Royal family must travel with a black outfit in case of a death in the family. No worries there for Meghan! The fabric of the suit looks cheap; I agree with OG SG on that point. Why an all-black outfit to visit children? Well, she draws attention to herself by dressing like she’s attending a funeral, there’s always hope for the Australian trip! Hope she brings some pizzaz to her visit down under!
Absolutely love this outfit! She does trouser outfits like no other, and each one becomes my new favorite. Her business style is flawless, and I love that she treats these events like true work events.
I absolutely love the way she masterfully plays with contrasting textures to really make shades of black pop (like she did in Wales, too, with the suede touches). The silk here is gorgeous and shimmers splendidly against the suit (the solid, clean lines in the suit are wonderful and flattering too!).
On another note, I love the soundbites we got from today. To hear Harry and Meghan watch Disney movies together, about how Meghan gave one girl a flower for her memory box… One of the sweetest events yet. What brave children and how great to honor them! Their love for the people – and especially children – really shines.
The pants are hemmed properly – YAY! The pants are also super-practical if you’re getting down on kids’ level. The black is okay but I’m not on board with the top (color or material).
Meghan’s black suit was very chic, and fit and flattered her in a way some of her early outfits did not. But the challenge is appropriateness to the occasion. Meghan and Harry arrived in broad daylight, in summer weather, to an event centered on uplifting children. Harry was wearing a blue suit (not black), and loafers (not a business or dress shoe). Her strictly tailored, all-black “power suit” with satin camisole and pointy stiletto heels, although gorgeous, was simply too dressy and serious for the day part, occasion and relative to what Harry was wearing. The children were probably expecting a “princess” and got an executive dressed for a cocktail occasion. I’m not conservative nor one of those who advocate all dresses, all covered up, all pastels, or anything like that. I admire her very much. But I do think Meghan has a way to go to master fashion signaling and calibrating her style choices to the occasion. As you’ve said on MM many times, she is dressed for a job, and I think this one missed the mark.
100% in agreement with this post.
