Meghan Markle and Prince Harry attended services commemorating Anzac Day in London at Westminster Abbey this afternoon. Anzac Day is a national day of remembrance in Australia and New Zealand that broadly commemorates all Australians and New Zealanders “who served and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations” and “the contribution and suffering of all those who have served”.
The start of the day for Meghan and Harry began at 5am BST at Wellington Arch with the Anzac Day Dawn Ceremony. While today’s events were most certainly not about the clothes, as a fashion blog that is the aspect we’ll cover. You can get lots of great coverage of Anzac Day and the significance of the important day here.

Love Meghan’s look today? We asked the team to come up with some of their favourite #MirrorMeg options:
What did you think of Meghan’s look for Anzac Day 2018?
SG says
I am not sold on this look. She looks great from the head up…I love the beret and her hair and makeup is on point. But I am not loving the outfit. I have never been a fan of Emilia Wickstead. I also wish that Meghan would depart from midi-length skirts. She is not that tall, and midi length skirts tend to make shorter women look stumpy (which is why I avoid them myself at all costs, lol). And she is so svelte that all the extra fabric in the skirt just weighs down her tiny frame. Knee length please!
Deborah Lorenzen says
Agree, she looked great from the waist up then I saw the length of the skirt. I wanted to take a scissor and lop it off to right below the knee. She does wear a lot of mid calf skirts not always a good option dependent on the fabric. This fabric was just too clingy and textured for a longer skirt.
lawmom says
The suit is appropriate. But the length, the cut, and especially the heavy cloqué fabric weigh her down. The fabric, in particular, reminds me of an old fashioned housecoat. I’m not a big fan of Emilia Wickstead – some of her ready-to-wear stuff is okay, but it seems whenever she does a bespoke piece for the Duchess of Cambridge, it’s dull and doesn’t really do anything for her. Same here – the suit doesn’t do anything for her. The hat and her hair look nice.
lawmom says
I should add – the fact MM wore Emilia Wickstead, who’s from New Zealand, is a nice touch. I still don’t like the suit though!
Bertie says
Seriously, I think Meghan was born to wear this suit, and I think all the fashion moments of my life have led to the point where I was lucky enough to see her step out in it. I don’t think any other woman on the planet could wear this boxy jacket/retro midi pencil skirt and look this good; it works brilliantly on her body shape.
That textured fabric is so vintage too, (Crimplene anyone?!) this is all classic Chanel, Jackie O style. The hat is divine and the clutch so neat and perfect; I simply adore those earrings. I can’t see her ever doing better than this for a remembrance ceremony.
I’m delighted we can have hair out of face when wearing a hat and this is a welcome break from flapping lapels and open coat fronts. Has Meghan ever been seen in a suit before? It’s hard to credit this is the young lady I was used to seeing touting her yoga mat through the snowy streets of Toronto.
I’m always a little sorry to see fashion somehow discredited in posts about these events. I would have said choice of outfit was more important than ever to show diplomatic respect for the theme of the day. And Meghan hits it out the park on that score.
Lauri says
Wow Bertie, you have taken the words right out of my mouth!
Bertie says
Why, thank you Lauri, coming from a seasoned campaigner like you, that’s very special. It seems Sophie Wessex has the exact same suit but wears it in a pale blue. This is not helpful even if you’re stick thin, and Sophie has a good set of curves. There were some Rachel Zane outfits Meghan wore which had high-waisted skirt over a short jumper and I thought they did her no favours. But this Wickstead suit works Meghan’s shape expertly. I’m not often a fan of Wickstead, but this one’s a home run !
Jane says
Bertie and Laurî, your passion for Meghan is on another level – I always chuckle at your interactions. Hope you become friends offline.
Lauri says
Quick comment because I really can’t type on my phone, but do we think that this might be Meghan’s last engagement before the wedding?
Imke says
It is said so.
Cricri says
The look s Perfect for the occasion. First sight
The outfit gives the impression to be heavy on her but when you look at different pictures especially inside the abbey and when que they are leaving you see that it still gives her a slender frame. The head is just fantastic no hair all over her face and we can see her delicate features. The length of the skirt is also good considering that she has people seating opposite her and TV camera will focus on her couple of time. She can protect her dignity with little efforts :-)))
Madison Mile says
BEAUTIFUL! I love the Philip Tracey hat and the dragonfly details. Her makeup looks flawless (even after being now up for hours after the first event earlier in the day!) and I love the blow out she has today.
The outfit is giving me a Audrey Hepburn/Jackie Onassis feel (two women she has mentioned are style icons for her in past interviews). I think it was a lovely choice for the event, and something a little unexpected.
Lauri says
I definitely get a Audrey Hepburn vibe from this outfit, which is never a bad thing 🙂
Lauri says
I don’t have much to add, as it seems that Bertie reached into my mind and picked out all my thoughts about this outfit! 🙂 love ya Bertie!
At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I really do love this outfit! I’m always thrilled to see a woman wearing a retro outfit and nailing it! That is pretty tough to do as everything must be right or it veers into costume land. The hat, purse and shoes just work so well with this dress and jacket, truly spot on.
I have to admit to not being the biggest fan of Emilia Wickstead, some of her dresses that Kate has worn are just so unflattering, that I’ve rather gone off this designer. But after seeing this creation I might have to rethink that. As Bertie said not every woman can pull off this look, I don’t think I could, but it works very well for Meghan’s figure.
Thanks for the great post MM! I wonder if we’ll see much of Meghan until the wedding or if she’ll take the next few weeks to finalize everything and get in some yoga and meditation? Can’t wait!!
Iris says
I LOVE both of these classy, appropriate, and beautiful outfits that truly pay respect to the events of the day. I don’t think Meghan could have chosen better, she looks phenomenal and has completely stepped up to her role as a working royal. I’ve become and evern BIGGER fan of hers after this week! I love both hats as well!
L Robins says
I liked Meghan’s pared down version of the dragonfly hat so much more than the original (too many dragonflies on that). The bespoke suit is immaculate. I do agree with others that the skirt is too long/loose at the bottom for her slight shape and height, but I’ve been thinking that about all the longer skirts/dresses she’s been wearing in the UK. Her tailors just need to take in and shorten these.
I have to add that her dawn and daytime makeup was absolutely stunning today. There wasn’t one single photo where her beauty didn’t shine. She brought the sun to the mournful celebrations.
admin says
Great points, L! We think Meghan will come into her own as a member of the Royal Family – will just take some time. She was widely critiqued for sleeveless dresses by the media earlier in the week, so she took no chances at all today.
xoxo,
A&C
Imke says
I would guess this suit was made way before the press critisised her for no sleeves this week.
Daniela King says
I love the look, I think it is appropriate for the engagement but she looks even more gorgeous in the Smythe coat.
