Meghan's Mirror

Chronicling the Chic, Classic and Casual Style Duchess of Sussex (the former Meghan Markle)

September 11, 2018

Meghan Markle’s Pre-Duchess Red Carpet Trends

Before she was the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle graced many red carpets for her show, “Suits,” as well as to represent for charitable causes and other events close to her heart. While her looks are much more tailored and manicured now, we can look back at a glimpse of her pre-Royal life to get a sense of her style at its finest, red carpet moments. Take look at some of her top trends for the red carpet below!

Tailored Sheath Dresses + Dressy Pumps

No matter what event Meghan attended, often her go-to landed on a body-hugging dress and pumps that added flair and polish. Though the dresses often showed off her great figure, they typically highlighted a higher neckline (no plunging cleavage here!) and emphasized her legs more than anything. These dresses were a notch up from her outfits in suits, but had a similar feel – dressy and polished without feeling too professional. Her shoes often were closed-toe stiletto pumps, but frequently showed off a unique detail such as a laced-up ankle or beadwork.

Neutrals

We already know of the Duchess’ love of tonal colors, and this rang true in many of her outfit choices for the red carpet before she became a royal. Her olive skin tone allowed for more varieties of grey, taupe, silver, gold, and black, and pairing them with a nude pump or heeled sandal helped to elongate her legs even further. Picking neutrals for an outfit, whether its dressed down or up, is an easy go-to that seems simple, but helps you shine in any occasion.

Polished Pants

Meghan often gravitated towards pants to round out her red carpet looks – so much so that she struck a signature pose each time she wore them! Whether oversized or skinny, dressing up pants added a level of comfort to whatever outfit she chose. Meghan paired them with both heels and flats, depending on the event and the shape of her outfit overall.

Repeated Shoes

Just because you star on a hit TV show doesn’t mean you have an unlimited budget to pick out your ultimate wardrobe! Before she was a Duchess, Meghan often wore and re-wore many of her favorite classic pairs of pumps, sandals and more out on the red carpet. While others may see that as a faux pas, it shows off Meghan’s authentic, unapologetic self – that rewearing shoes are no big deal! Pick high-quality classics that last, and no one will think twice.

What do you love about Meghan’s pre-Duchess Red Carpet style that you hope she carries in her new royal life?

I glad to see that Meghan has continued to present her wonderful posture going into her royal role. I did notice that during her first couple engagements as Harry’s bride-to-be, she was a bit hunched over and timid which I’m sure was down to nerves but since then I’m thrilled to see that she’s standing straight with her shoulders back and arms at her side. Imho, pretty dresses and glamorous heels rate second compared to excellent posture!

Out of all the outfits shown above my favorite is the neutral, gold toned dress with the bow at the shoulder. Now, I’m not normally a bow-at-the-shoulder type of gal but this bow wasn’t to in your face but provided a nice bit of interest and that color is stunning on Meghan.

I love the fact that she repeats shoes because that’s so relatable.
