Meghan Markle spent her 37th birthday celebrating, but not at her own party! Instead, she was sharing the day with Prince Harry’s best friend, Charlie van Straubenzee, at the society wedding of the summer. The wedding between Charlie and Daisy Jenks took place in Surrey, with a morning wedding ceremony and an all-night party.
We loved seeing Meghan show off her society wedding style, which often calls for a floral dress and a hat or fascinator. Instead, she opted for a very modern, pleated shirt dress from Club Monaco. Paired with classic heels and fascinator, the overall look was on-trend and elegant, with a breezy chiffon fabric to keep her cool during the current heat wave.

What did you think of Meghan’s wedding guest style?

Happy Birthday to the Duchess of Sussex! She’s wearing another lovely facinator which suits her face and hairstyle perfectly. She’s also wearing my favorite Aquazurra black bow pumps which work nicely with this pleated dress.
I love that the Duchess took a little risk with going with a darker palette for the dress, and a graphic pattern, as opposed to floral. She’s making her own statement while still looking wedding appropriate and chic. It’s a winner for me!

My favourite pieces from this ensemble are the hat and shoes. The shoes have just enough detail on them to make sure they are interesting but not overpowering and I think that style of hat really suits her (I was kind of hoping she’d wear a hat like this for the RAF service at Westminster Abbey!). I’m really not keen on the dress but I can understand why she has worn something of that material as it’s very hot today. Would like to see a close up of the earrings as soon as they are identified as I’m always intrigued to see her jewellery.

Happy Birthday to the Duchess. The best I can say is that her hat game is strong.

Meghan looks lovely and I think her choice of dress was perfect for the occasion as she knows she’d be an attraction to photographers: a simple, yet fun outfit in a subtle color, nothing eye-catching as it’s about the bride and groom today, not their guests.

Yet another stellar ensemble from the Duchess!!!! This dress looks so breezy yet elegant, the color blocking on the skirt portion is my favorite and her choice of accessories really brings the whole look together.
Happy Birthday Meg!!

Happy Birthday to HRH!
She looks great today. Most of all I love the colorblock pleated skirt. Color combination is very pretty and the overall look is trendy.

Agreed!

Love this, especially the pleated skirt portion of the dress! I think she looks perfect for a summer wedding.

I like the dress… but those colour for summer…. NO!

Love it! Classic Meghan with society flair. Reminds me of some of my favorite pre-engagement pleated dresses of hers.
PS – I just read American Princess by Leslie Carroll today, and you are mentioned by name, MM team! Loved seeing you and your site get some credit in print!

Happy birthday Meghan! I love this look, it’s stylish, chic and appropriate! Meghan is the prettiest woman everywhere she goes!

I think she looks very pretty, and I LOVE the hat, it looks wonderful on her. Extremely flattering.
I would definitely wear this outfit, but I wouldn’t wear it to a friends Wedding. I feel like it’s slightly too casual (I think it’s the shirt style in the top) and also the colours are a little dark for a Summer Wedding in my opinion. The fabric is lovely though, great movement, and the pleats are very classy, lovely length and it fits her well. The shoes are also very nice, and we’ve seen her pair them well with a few outfits now, and I’m more than happy to keep seeing them.
I’m not saying she looks bad. She certainly looks lovely, but I could see this look for somewhere other than a Summer Society Wedding. I think a lighter color may have been more appropriate for both the occasion and the Summer heat.

I agree completely. Since it’s a lovely outfit it’s a win, but it would be even better at another type of event. Nice to see her in a less expensive option though.
Patrice says
I agree that the collar made it look a tiny bit casual – I think Meghan really, really likes a shirt collar! (Wimbledon look, Ascot look, etc.)
Gigi says
I think Meghan is still struggling with her off-duty look. I feel this is another business like look that is not at all suitable for a country wedding. The black accessories are so hard. I guess at least it fits her properly!
Smithy says
Agreed, the hat and shoes are lovely in my opinion but I would have thought the dark colours attracted the heat from the sun. I would have been interested to see her wear something like the GOAT dress at an event like this tbh.
Deborah Lorenzen says
Agree I don’t like black dresses for a wedding with the exception of an evening look. The black hat and accessories were very business like and not keeping with the festive nature of a wedding on a beautiful summer’s day. I live in Florida and believe me black clothes no matter if they are linen, cotton or silk are uncomfortable in hot weather. Silk tends to get sticky in the heat. I love the jewelry, the clutch is cute, the shoes a repeat.
Patrice says
The dress isn’t black, it’s navy. The hat is black, though.
I liked it – the whole look with the sunglasses was super-cool and chic and the navy color complemented Harry’s dark blue waistcoat. So what if it was “dark” for a summer wedding or whatever the going criticism is – “if she likes it, I love it”, so to speak..
Pania says
Love the look!! But even more her lipstick. Does someone know the exact color or even the brand? Thanks in advance.
Deborah Lorenzen says
I read the description of the Club Monaco dress and the fabric is polyester. That is not a comfortable fabric to wear on a warm afternoon!
Crystal Gardner says
Not feeling the belt, and would have loved to see her in a floral print or something bright and cheery. Otherwise I like it, don’t love it.
OG SG says
I like the dress, but I think that given the dress is navy that the black accessories are a misfire. I don’t actually have problems with darker colors for summer or weddings but the black doesn’t really fit in. But I like the dress and that it fits!
Julie says
I agree with much of what has been said already. I like the cut and fit of this dress very much, and the fact that it is less expensive. I am not a huge fan of the colour block pattern on the dress, though, although that adds a modern touch that I do sort of like, or the dark colours in summer. In a light grey with cream accessories it would have been a win, maybe even with the colour block pattern in bright contrasting colours.
