Today, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex attended a gala performance of Hamilton in support of Sentebale at the Victoria Palace Theatre. The evening was designed to raise awareness and funds for Sentebale’s work with children and young people affected by HIV.
It was the first time we have seen Meghan in an official capacity since the royal “summer break”. She and Harry both looked delighted to be back to work and in the public eye, with several engagements coming up for the couple.
Meghan’s look was chic and glamorous in a black tuxedo-style dress, which added some va-va-voom to the event. We believe that the dress’ length will debated for days to come, but we loved the business-style drama to Meghan’s look that clearly defines the way that she is approaching her royal style. Short hemlines are something that Meghan has favoured for years – anyone recall her short shorts – so the length is not a surprise from Meghan’s style background, but makes quite the statement as the Duchess of Sussex.

What did you think of Meghan’s look?
Smithy says
Ok, I’m going to be the one to say it, I think I would have preferred the dress had it been a tad longer. I actually really love this style of dress and I’m kind of annoyed that my figure being what it is won’t allow me to wear one, but I feel that the silhouette looks a bit incomplete. Had it been knee-length or just above it would have been perfect for me. Interested in learning more about the earrings and the clutch though!

WOW I JUST LOVE MEGHAN STYLE SHE IS CLASSY CHIC STUNNIING AND SEXY .

Nice to be back and see the Duchess of Sussex at a new event.
I love this tuxedo style dress and the simple updo, box clutch and black skinny black pumps are the perfect touches.
By the way, I know there are people who feel her legs are too thin to wear above the knee dresses, but I love seeing her legs after what seems months and months of longer midi dresses, pants and long evening gowns. Let’s let her live a little this summer! 🙂

I take a lot of inspiration from her casual style. Her formal style is kind of hit or miss for me. I have to be honest…. This outfit is not only not my favourite one, but also a tad inappropriate. Too short for the ocasion (and maybe a bit too much cleavage… but don’t take me on that one, because I can only see so far). I think I know where she wanted to take this outfit idea and I like it, but it’s a NO. Also the brand where she got this dress had others with a similar feel, but a bit more appropriate.
Smithy says
I know where you’re coming from. I think if the bottom half of the dress was a pencil skirt style I would have liked it more. There’s a really nice tuxedo style dress by Max Mara on Harrods website, I really think that one would have suited her better.
OG SG says
I’m sure some people are clutching their pearls but I think she looks great. The dress is covered up enough on top that it balances the length, as does the more “professional” hair. If it had been styled differently it could have been a different story but I think she looks good.

I so love that Meghan is dressing the way she wants to dress while still looking completely appropriate. I can only imagine how difficult it must be to keep a sense ones self while also trying to juggle a new life, a new husband, a new country, a new (very public)job and becoming a member of the BRF, phew my head spins just thinking about all of this. Meghan is obviously a very strong, passionate and compassionate woman and I really look forward to seeing her evolution (in fashion and other ways too)in the years to come.
OG SG says
I also like the fact that she is incorporating some elements from her pre-wedding style. I really liked Kate’s cute pre-engagement style, and am horrified (hyperbole for effect) that her sense of style appears to have completely disappeared in favor of dowdy coatdresses and other matronly outfits. And sorry, I don’t think that being the wife of a future king means you have to dress like a grandma. So I am relieved that Meghan at least appears to be evolving in style without losing herself.

BE BLESSED DUCHESS MEGHAN. WE LOVE YOU!

OMG, I’m swooning over this dress!!! And the clutch, the clutch I must have!! I’ve read on other sites that some feel that this dress should have been a bit longer but I have to respectfully disagree, I think a longer hem would have thrown this whole look off and would have veered it into “frumpy town”. Imho, Meghan looks fresh and young while still projecting a professional image. And I don’t believe that she’s wearing the dreaded pantyhose 🙂
Sofia says
I honestly love this look! Actually, not the look itself, but the notion behind it. It gives royalty a 21st century vibe. Queen Letizia rocks short hemlines and she is a style icon. I don’t mean that the British family should go nude or anything (nudity is not bad, it is the most natural shape), but becoming a little more modern and a little less medieval-modest would not hurt them. Anyway, I feel someting is a little off with this particular dress on the Duchess. It gives me a weird vibe, even though tuxedo dresses are gorgeous. I just think that it creates a not-so-good analogy on her. I do love the dress, since it is minimal, classy and chic, just not on the Duchess. Sorry for the huge text. I wish that she will keep on wearing short styles from now on! It suits her in general.
Ali says
I thought this was one of Meghan’s better looks. She looks more “true to her self” and comfortable in what she is wearing (as opposed to the clothes wearing her) than she has since the wedding.
SSM says
I don’t really understand the comments about the dress being too short. Is this 1940? Or do these people really believe that women show respect by covering their bodies? If so, I would suggest that that is false: the number of inches of thigh showing has nothing to do with anything except what a woman thinks suits her on that particular day. Women are not required to show up covered enough to suit some silly arbitrary standard that so many people in the comments section seem to be internalizing and repeating. Ick.
She looks modern and fun. Many in the BRF only pull that off once in a blue moon, so this is super refreshing and makes me excited for the Fall!
Smithy says
It’s just opinion. When on duty, whether in the day or in the evening, a royal or royal couple doesn’t just represent themselves but they represent the Queen and the whole family as well. I think what some people here and on social media are saying is that events such as these, although not in the presence of the Queen, are still relatively formal in nature. It could also be a British vs American thing as well. When in the theatre, particularly for evening performances, it’s more culturally acceptable to cover up than to show skin. Whenever I went on school trips to the theatre, we were always told to dress ‘smart casual’ and that was just in the daytime, so evening performances are normally more conservative.
To be honest, I would have thought this more of a date-night dress rather than an outfit for the theatre. I think the wide skirted bottom of the dress is slightly overwhelming on her slim figure and it looks a little more sexy than I personally think a British royal should dress, but hey ho!
Kelly Matos says
Essentially, opinions are just opinions. Person A is more into conservative attire for evening events and person B may be less so. No one is stuck in time or criticizing Meghan for her choices. Clothes are for fun and self expression. Nothing dead serious. 😀 I do thing Meghan looks fun and as I said I can understand where she wanted to take this look. But something is missing there for me and it’s not my favourite look.
I do however am happy there are other people here with a different opinion than my own. We can have a great discussion about it. But in the end we are not going to change our taste. It’s just up to personal preference!
Smithy says
Absolutely agree Kelly. I would love her to bust out some pear drop diamond earrings and perhaps a necklace or a bracelet. I think if the outfit is plain there should be some jewellery emphasis and if the outfit is more eye catching, subdued jewellery would give the outfit its due. I would love to see which jewellery she’s been given by the Queen and/or out of Diana’s collection. There’s a lovely emerald choker that would look really good on her, especially with black!
Kelly Matos says
I agree 100%! But I do think she seems to be a lot more into dainty jewellery (which I really love on her and have been copying a lot lately (hihi)). We have seen her however with big drop earrings at events in the past. So that might happen very soon. I can’t wait.

Well it’s a complete miss for me. It’s just a bit of a bore. And frankly the messy hair has got to go away. She has every resource at her disposal and at this stage of the game she should be a bit more polished. I agree it’s a great date-night look.
Smithy says
Thinking about it, this would have been a brilliant opportunity to repeat the navy Stella McCartney Cape Dress. It would be nice to see some pattern as well, like a bit of brocade or something like that.
Grace says
I love this look. I have a dress in similar style so I was thrilled to see Meghan’s choice, and in my opinion she really knows how to look professional but keep that personal touch that shows she knows what she likes to wear.
Nadine says
The dress was fire!!!!! she looked amazing, confident and relaxed!!!! She stayed true to herself. The length was appropriate too!! Someone said too much cleavage???? what are you a nun???
Kelly Matos says
Hi! What I said was that from what I could see in the picture it looked like it. I also said to not take me on that, because the picture wasn’t very clear to me at the time as I could be completely wrong. Unfortunately, even though I like the sophisticated idea of the outfit, I still don’t particularly like it that much. I made a comment based on the little information I had at the time and what it looked like to me. I am deeply sorry it propelled you to take it so personally.
Now that I have more images to look at, I take back what I said about the neckline. It’s acceptable… it’s ok! I have very long legs and usually when I wear shorter skirts I prefer not to have a whole lot of cleavage on show… Just some. That surely doesn’t make me a nun!
Deborah Lorenzen says
I began to follow MM because of her casual accessible style; looks that I could relate to. Her formal looks have always missed the mark for me also. MM’s formal style seems to favor all-black ensembles that can look somewhat somber at times especially when topped off with a black hat or fascinator. I agree with Karen, again black dress, black pumps. the black clutch, messy bun, very sparse accessories. The length is a little bothersome, in my opinion, it’s not flattering for her body type. She was going for sexy, I guess. I hope when we see her in a glam full-length gown moment she chooses something other than black.
Eva says
I love all-black ensembles! In the US (at least in the east where I live) black is sophisticated and smart especially for evenings. Then again…. as Smithy suggested, this could be a British vs American thing.
Personally, I love most of Meghan’s styles (regardless of what color she wears) before and after marrying a royal. I think she is elegant, classy and sophisticated. I am skinny just like Meghan (I have a fast metabolism) and for most of my life when I dress I’ve been covering up my arms and legs just because of “too skinny” comments I’ve heard since childhood that sometimes made me feel unattractive. Occasionally, since I’ve discovered this site, I browse for inspiration and I don’t tend to completely cover up my arms and legs like a nun anymore. Thanks MM!

I totally agree with you… I think she does casual very well. When I am bored or stuck in a rut I always google for photos of her outfits for inspiration. Works every time. Her formal attire however for me is… I don’t know… Maybe she had different stylists working with her before and now the person giving her advice is not so great at royal events… Who knows… It just needs some sugar and spice… still keeping her great essence of course….

I love this look on Meghan, I think it totally suits her and the occasion. As a Canadian, I recognize the chicness of one of our favourite labels, Judith and Charles. They are known for their minimalist, precise tailoring, particularly their jackets. I predict the Duchess of Sussex will wear them again as she really rocks the look. As an anglophile, I also respect the sense of ownership of the BRF that the British people have, however, it is important to allow times to change and modernize. I agree with the comparisons with other modern European royals, such as Queen Letitzia of Spain, Princess Mary of Denmark, and all of the Swedish royal women. It is possible to respect tradition while still breathing some fresh air into the room and promoting some new, up and coming British designers. Also agree that the Duchess of Cambridge, who is very pretty and slim, has allowed her look to veer into Princess Anne territory. No offence, but we are not 60 years old yet. Kate used to have a more fun look and she should be allowed to express herself a bit more. She will not be Queen for a long time. We are only young and gorgeous once!
Mary O'Keefe says
Eva, in truth, most women would love to have your problem and any negative comments are probably jealousy. Rock on with whatever you are comfortable with!
Deborah Lorenzen says
Cleavage? The cleavage comments are funny because I really don’t see any cleavage in the photos!
Deborah Lorenzen says
Yes Kelly some drop earrings would have looked great with this instead of the small dainty gold earrings! Hopefully we will see her wear more of Diana’s fabulous jewelry.

I like this! I’ll admit when I first first saw this look on Twitter and people were going nuts, I thought “what’s all the fuss about a black coat dress?”, but as I look at it more, I love the fit of it and Meghan’s confidence as she rocks it. Okay, maybe a drop earring would have been extra cool, but she looks fresh and sexy and best of all – herself. She seems to be a really confident woman with a hot husband who adores her. She’s winning, in my book.
Anne says
Meghan is a verry beautiful woman. Inside and outside. But she is getting to skinny…. Here leg’s are soo thin.. I hope she won’t loose more wheigt.
