Today, Meghan and Harry attended the opening of The Field of Remembrance at Westminster Abbey, an annual tribute surrounding Remembrance Day.
The Remembrance Day celebrations in November are a somber reminder of those who have lost their lives protecting us in the line of duty. Although the focus should remain on remembering those who have fallen, we recognize that many of you look to us for fashion. We have shared that information below, and will be donating a portion of our advertising revenue to veterans charities internationally.

What did you think of Meghan’s look for opening The Field of Remembrance?
Lisa says
Not my favorite look. The individual pieces – hat, coat and boots – are fabulous but don’t work well together in my view.
Marjorie Ireland says
Stunning, perfection from head to toe! Dignified and classy! Perfect for the occasion!
Jane H. says
Love the look! Very appropriate.
Michelle says
Totally appropriate and well considered ensemble.
What a stunningly beautiful woman she is!
Fabuleuse says
This coat style and fabric are not my favorite. I would’ve preferred a more structured coat. Aside from that, Meghan looked appropriate for the occasion and beautiful as always.
Meemies says
As always elegant, distinguished clothes for the occasion! She’s definitely an asset to the royal tradition of choosing the proper attire for any public event!

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I love the Duchess’ look today! I never really thought about combining black and navy blue before seeing Meghan doing it and now it’s one of my favorite color combos! My only quibble is the slouch in the boots, it’s just not a favorite of mine. I love the rest of the boot but just wish it didn’t have the slouch.
I saw some closeups of Meghan on another site and does this woman even have pores? Her skin is always so radiant and glowing! And for having a 6 month old at home I can only imagine how tired she must be but she never looks it. How does she do it?!
I wanted to say Thanks MM for keeping the focus on fashion here. While I do understand the the events and the causes the Duchess supports are a bit more “important” than what she’s wearing, I have to say that it’s really nice to come here and just focus on something fun and a bit frivolous.

Lol at the last paragraph- love your honesty Lauri

Agree about Meghan’s complexion, her make-up today is beautiful and she looks fabulous under that darling hat. I shall never agree that fashion is frivolous, I agree that this is one very enjoyable subject, but for me these are serious fashion choices for a serious event, and I can appreciate the thought that an intelligent woman can put into intelligent style picks. I’m looking at Christine Lagarde and Theresa May here, as much as Meghan or Kate!!
Lauri says
Perhaps, frivolous wasn’t the correct word to use. I guess I was talking more about how I view my royal fashion watching, it’s a guilty pleasure that I get a lot of enjoyment out of and more than a few fashion inspirations. I do understand what you’re saying Bertie and I do agree that intelligent style picks abound and not just among the royal ladies. Personally, while I do appreciate the thought and effort that goes into fashion selections, I just don’t want to get too caught up in the analysis of fashion choices but that’s just me and I do enjoy your very thoughtful and intelligent commentary on the Duchess’ fashion.

Just wanted to offer humble apology if I sounded more grumpy than I meant to, really don’t want to criticise what you say here!! you’re very generous about my comments considering, especially since I think yours are far more informed than mine 🙂 Btw, have just put one of those WNU shirts on order, I knew I had to give way in the end, because you’re right as always, you really can’t have enough quality cotton shirts. I’ve decided this stripe is quite different from any of my others, just hope I like the fabric when it comes. Sometimes they put a silky finish on cotton when I prefer it kept nice and crunchy!

I like the hat. The coat is bulky looking, not flattering at all. And in other pictures I’ve seen doesn’t seem to fit properly (too small). I think it may be a coat she had prior to the engagement. She has so many lovely black and navy coats; any one of them would have been better. Perhaps the navy gloves are the same ones she wore for Trooping the Colour.

Alas, I’m unable to get on board with this outfit, so am hoping you kind people can show me where I’m going wrong. For myself I avoid these boucle fabrics like the plague since they add so much bulk, especially to a winter coat. In this case it adds too much to Meghan’s frame and makes the huge lapels even more pronounced, I feel these done’t suit Meghan at the best of times, making her top-heavy on a short torso. I’m not too happy with the way the coat doesn’t close so well at the front, for me a remembrance service is one time when top tailoring counts. With the boucle coat style which I remember from many years ago -Barbara Hulaniki and Biba anyone? – and the long loose hair I’m getting 60’s anti-war demo vibes rather than chiming with military sacrifice.
I’m also saddened if this is how Meghan wants to keep focus off her clothes and on events because I feel she’s rejecting my support. If she’s not following the respectful tailored route of many other ladies marrying into European royal families then I feel she’s rejecting royal fashion and the support she gets from blogs like these. I imagine it’s possible she might be confused to the nth degree by the situation she finds herself in and these are early days. I just hope she feels it’s worth sticking around. Sorry to sound negative, I hate to do this to this lovely page where I enjoy real companionship and appreciate the work you do here enormously.

I don’t think she is doing it to reject her fashion followers. She has very ambitious goals and plans on serious issues, like women’s rights. Unfairly, the perception of a lot of people are that women who invest too much interest or thought in fashion are frivolous or not serious. Obvs we all know this is a stupid viewpoint, but it is rooted in sexism that is still pervasive. So I think she is trying to be viewed as serious so people takes what she says seriously. I have been a lawyer for 15 years and I’ve only recently started wearing more “fun” clothes to court because my reputation is firmly cemented and I’ve stopped caring as much what fusty people think. So it is less a rejection of what fashion-interested people enjoy and more acknowledging the type of world in which we live. Remember the freakout when Michelle Obama wore a sleeveless sheath? Sigh.

I couldn’t agree with you more. In her engagement interview, Meghan declared that she and Harry were going to change the world. People understandably scoffed at her for that grand pronouncement. After all, what we all saw was a pretty face we identified as Rachel on “Suits.”
Meghan needed to gain credibility as quickly and as impactfully as possible and that meant being very intentional in not looking like a princess and in playing down her looks, including her hair. The Rachel Zoey image completely disappeared. I believe strongly that it’s only intended to be a short-term strategy to allow the public to see who Meghan Markle is and what she can do before the Palace had a chance to craft her image for her.
The Sussex’s strategy from day one has been to showcase Meghan’s competence and demonstrate both Megan’s and Harry’s leadership capabilities. Meghan’s objective to achieve credibility has been accomplished and the Sussex’s position as leaders on the global stage starting on the Oceana Tour, has been cemented with the Africa Tour. It came at a great cost, but Meghan no longer has anything to prove. I believe we will soon begin to see Meghan transition into a more glamorous style, which has already started with her hairstyle. While she was trying to be taken seriously, there’s noway Meghan would have warn that glorious bouncy hairstyle she wore with the purple dress at the One World Youth Summit. She’s no longer downplaying her looks.
We can be rest assured that Meghan will be given us plenty to enjoy fashion wise, Right now though, I notice a Sussex PR strategy to not give the tabloid media anything to grab unto that the Royal Reporters can claim to be “legitimate” criticisms. This effectively muzzles the tabloid media. So, the fashion transition might be slower than we would like.

Thanks so very much for your comment OG,, you’ve helped me untangle a rather tight knot there, and I feel much better without it!! I so agree about the problem of being taken seriously at work. I worked in the very male-oriented financial journalism and for me it was a fine line to draw to make sure I wouldn’t be mistaken for a secretary. It was important not to wear what I sometimes think of as ‘babyclothes’ like pantsuits or dungarees, since then I felt you were discounted completely.
At one point I was so in such a dour office I found it worked a treat if I wore a silk scarf, especially with a double row of pearls — this then looked matronly, or possibly like ‘Nanny’, to assorted public school types, and I got to be included in conversation. I felt I was pretty much dressing like Margaret Thatcher, despite being no fan of hers. I also took to wearing dark nail polish as many men reel back from that as much as the pompous pearls. It’s such a weird way of being sexy while saying ‘hands off’! The latter of course was another bit problem, keep some femininity while fobbing off unwanted attention.
So, yes, I totally take your point about Meghan wanting her causes to be taken seriously, and when I stop to think about it after your comment, she’s doing much the same as myself, as I stuck to dull neutrals and sensible shirtwaisters for years! In which case you have found me out for hypocrisy lol. Thank heavens for the intelligent discussion available on MM, it’s such a huge help coming here.

This outfit is just OK for me. The hat is adorable and her hair looks glorious. I usually like Sentaler coats but this is not my favorite, especially as she removed the wrap belt and replaced it with what looks like a too-small pants belt. I think there is too much bulk near the bottom, too, with the coat, a rather voluminous skirt, and the slouchy boots. I am not a huge fan of slouchy boots in general but I think they look a lot better when paired with something sleek, like a pencil skirt, to offset the bulk.

I like the look, but I’m not 100% sold for some reason. I like the hat and think the color goes well with the coat. The coat, as someone mentioned, originally comes with a boucle tie belt of the same fabric. I’m thinking she swapped it out for a black leather belt to tie in what looks like a black dress underneath and her black leather boots? After seeing the coat in its original form on a model from the website, I can’t help but be put a little off by how Meghan wears this coat gaping in the front. For such a formal event, it looks sloppy. But, if I’m guessing, I think she chose this fit to expose a bit of the fabric of her dress so it’s not hidden? Otherwise, I’d buy the shoes. I’m a TM fan, so I love that she’s wearing one of her shoes again!
Laura B. says
While the coat is not my favorite from a texture standpoint, I think she looks amazing. Her hair has been incredible lately! I adore the hat! Maybe my favorite yet! And I never knew you could wear black and navy together until I saw her doing it. I love it and do it all the time now! I wish we could see her dress… I’m sure it’s beautiful!

The Duchess looks lovely. I really like this coat, but the way it is worn by the Duchess does not do well. The opening at the front, does not give the coat a polished look, the belt does not go with it. The model’s enclosed front and belt give a elegant , streamline finish. The boots are sloppy, adding bulk to the overall finish. The hat is divine, just enough netting on her face, with the added sprinkling of sparkles to add interest, a beautiful colour. Love the addition of the gloves. Her makeup looked stunning.
