This evening, Meghan attended the Royal Academy’s opening of the ‘Oceania’ exhibit. The exhibition is the first major exploration of Oceanic art in Britain, and the largest ever to be staged in Europe.
The event also marked Meghan’s first official solo outing as a member of the Royal Family. The Duchess of Sussex was beaming as she confidently aced her first appearance as a solo royal.
We thought that Meghan’s dress had a serious vintage vibe to it, with a deep v-neck cut in velvet on the Givenchy look. While it won’t be making our top 10 list for 2018, it was a look that was elegant, classic and aloof blend of event attire merging with Meghan’s style.
Heels: Aquazzura Deneuve Black Heels
Earrings: Birks Snowflake Earrings
Dress: Givenchy Velvet Appliqué dress
Purse: Givenchy Satin Clutch

The Shoes
The classic black pump, elevated with a cutout pattern on the heel and a bow by Aquazzura, are gorgeous. Here are some of our favorite MirrorMeg options:
The Dress
The velvet appliqué is quite distinctive, but there are many other ways to get Meghan’s chic black Givenchy dress’ look.

Joy! The Duchess Meghan looks radiant. The Givenchy’s dress is a beautiful modern update on the LBD. I love the s elegant contrast paneling at the neckline and cuffs, and I’m personally crazy about sheer sleeves, so seeing those on Meghan made it a hit for me.
The front slit makes this dress a little more daring than most she’s worn so far, but the length of the dress makes it work beautifully. The Birks diamond jewelry and the Givenchy clutch that I adore were the perfect accessories.
And yes, I know she’s wearing the Aquazzura Bow detail heels again, but I absolutely love them (still planning on getting them myself!) so she can repeat them forever and I wouldn’t get tired of them.
She’s wearing her hair in a straight blown out style with a nice center part that looks chic and modern. Another smash hit for me!

The heels are stunning, aren’t they? They are some of our favourites!

Wow, I hate this so very much. The big triangle in front looks like a bib. And the dress has too much fabric for such a tiny person. The billowing sleeves are no good, the dress is too long, and the bodice is unflattering to her chest. I still love the shoes and her hair looks SO shiny, but this outfit is terrible.

There are many far nicer dresses on the British high street. The shops are full of lovely long-sleeved midi dresses which would have looked better than this one. I think this is a case of paying (a lot!) for the name.

I thought I was going to like this when I saw it from a distance, but this is too Morticia Addams!
OG SG says
Agree on the Morticia. It is so disappointing because Givenchy is known for THE ultimate black dress (Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s) and this is just Victorian widows weeds to me.

Not my favorite. Those shoes are killer must be comfortable-ish, because she wears them a lot. The dress reminds me a bit of the blue polka dot Saloni the Duchess of Cambridge wore a couple of years ago – sheer sleeves and bib front. Bibs and high mid slits are hard for anyone to pull off, IMO. The belt saves it to some degree, but not enough.

I love this outfit on Meghan. She looks absolutely amazing, head to toe.

Well, her hair looks nice but that’s about it.
At this rate, I’m guessing her Australia wardrobe will be all new clothes while her shoes and accessories may be repeats.

I think the dress looks much better on her than it did the hanger. If it was about two inches shorter it would be perfection! I adore the clutch and the shoes (which I have in my closet) as they are the classic go to for an evening out.
Now, about her hair….. I’m sure someone will think this is insane, but her hair makes me think she’s pregnant, and not because she straightened it, or cut it, which is what the media is saying. It has nothing to do with the style. It’s about the texture.. Meghan’s hair is course and curly and when a woman is newly pregnant, it is advised to not use chemical relaxers on your hair, which Meghan routinely does. Meghan’s hair is technically “straight”, but her roots, the hair around her face, and the volume of her hair says to me that she used only a flatiron and not chemical treatment, in order to get it straight. Right or wrong, she looks beautiful as usual!

She looks amazing as always! I love how 1) she stays so true to her style, wearing black as often as she likes and 2) how she is able to wear black so wonderfully. She has such a skill to blend fabrics and shades of black (I didn’t even realize there were so many shades until her first first outings!). Each black dress looks different and she’s always mixing black in some new way. And this dress incorporates two of my favorite elements: the sheer blouson sleeves and mid-slit. She’s so elegant and has such a talent for fashion.

The dress was just “dowdy”! The sheer sleeves and the velvet insert, not a flattering silhouette. If she had her hair in a bun and wore sensible shoes she would look like a 1940s widow. Did she add the belt to give the dress some shape why not just choose a more fitted style? I agree with the poster who suggested the Duchess might be pregnant! Her stylist is relying on a flat iron as a straightening tool. During the cookbook launch, she did not remove her coat, at the Coach Core event she wore that top with the flappy front and today this loose-fitting frock could certainly be worn during early months of pregnancy, I wouldn’t be surprised if her pregnancy is announced upon their return from the Australian trip.
