It is the fashion question we are asked the most (right after, “where can I get that amazing insert-item-here?!”) is how will Meghan’s style change once she’s a Duchess?
Most people will already know that being a royal requires certain rules and regulations. You must curtsy to the right people, drink the right tea (earl grey, extra milky), and represent the right causes.
But how will Meghan Markle’s style change when she is a Duchess? Well…
The good news is…
Meghan’s style won’t change that much. We’ve already seen her favor midi-length hemlines, classic fashion pieces, conservative shoes, and modest styles in her sartorial choices. Her outfit for her first engagement in Nottingham is a perfect example – her turtleneck, midi-length skirt, and suede boots were the perfect royally-approved outfit choices, while also being very on trend!
Meghan’s style for most of her royally-related engagements so far – Harry’s polo tournament, the opening ceremonies of the Invictus Games, her engagement interview, etc. – has all been brilliantly stylish and royalty-friendly (with some few exceptions – you know what we mean *cough, ahem, ripped jeans*).
The bad news is…
There will be some changes. Hey, every marriage requires compromises!
Meghan has to ditch the distressed denim.
At least for official engagements. Ripped jeans are super cute for shopping in Chelsea, or walking Guy in Kensington Park, but they aren’t appropriate for a royal event. She will probably keep these in her closet for her downtime, but don’t expect to see them alongside the Queen.
Meghan has to skip on the mini skirts.
She’s loved them in the past for red carpet events, but those killer thighs won’t be on display much in the future. Conservative – meaning, longer lengths – is the name of the game for galas and glittering evening events.
Meghan has to plan her brands carefully.
The designer of her dress can say more about her outfit than the whole look put together. In the past, Kate has had to ditch her favorite brands because they were bought out by undesirable personalities. Meghan will have to do the same, and think carefully about the brands she chooses to wear.
So, what does the future hold for Meghan? Powerful charitable causes, amazing style choices, and a happily-ever-after!

I agree with you MM, I don’t see Meghan’s style changing much at all. She already ticks most of the protocol boxes, maybe she’ll have to start wearing pantyhose more often, which is a bummer in the summer, but I think that’s about it.
Not wanting to criticize Kate here but I really don’t like her “casual, sporty” event outfits and really hope that Meghan is able to find outfits for these types of events that aren’t skinny jeans and stripped tops. Personally, I think a nice pair of chino-type pants (not too tight, not too loose) and blouse or simple t-shirt is the ticket here.
