Meghan's Mirror

Chronicling the Chic, Classic and Casual Style Duchess of Sussex (the former Meghan Markle)

November 1, 2019

‘Commonwealth’ Handbags fit for a Duchess

Every now and again, we scroll back through our archives and sometimes find ourselves forgetting that just a few short years ago we were following the style of a stylish Toronto girl – Meghan Markle – who had fallen in love with a Prince. In the time since, we’ve seen a style evolution fit for a Duchess and the integration of a more royal style to her classic look. What we have also seen is that Meghan sticks true to her style and to who she is. It’s why we were able to predict that she’d wear a handbag from British brand DeMellier in advance of her having done so, and then why we were so excited to see her do so with the brand’s now iconic Mini Venice bag.

It’s why we’re just as equally confident today to say that Meghan will undoubtedly be a fan of the brand’s newest collection honouring her “home away from home” of Canada – another Commonwealth country – with a collection of bags named after Canadian cities we think Meghan would love.

The Vancouver

The world famous West Coast city, nestled next to the Pacific Ocean was the creative inspiration behind the DeMellier ‘Vancouver’ bag. The Vancouver presents a sleek structured design that marries the strength of the arrow-inspired double-bar lock with soft round edges. With a vintage yet contemporary look, the Vancouver is wonderfully versatile thanks to its adjustable strap and can be worn cross-body or over the shoulder.

We think Meghan would love to carry a bag highlighting the city that is home to favoured clothing brand Aritzia, has seal pups named after her and Harry, and that is represented in such a stylish way by this bag.

The Maxi Montreal

One of the oldest cities in North America, Montreal is the hub of culture and a favourite of Meghan’s, who often visited while living in Toronto. We particularly love the ‘Maxi Montreal’, which is slightly larger than the traditional ‘Montreal’ collection. The Maxi Montreal features multiple compartments and inside pockets and is roomy enough to host a laptop. In smooth, grain or croc effect leather, with a removable adjustable strap, each colourway even comes in two versions: with short or long top handles, to suit every style.

We think Meghan would love this bag because of the size – it would be perfect for more of the working lunches that Meghan may attend with her charitable works – big enough for a fashion sketchbook from a clothing capsule collaboration or some of Archie’s toys for when she’s out for lunch with the girls.

The Quebec

To visit Quebec City is to take a trip into a city of the past with a rich history in French culture in the heart of a very modern North America. Like it’s namesake city, the ‘Quebec’ bag from DeMellier is a true multitasker, the perfect clutch-meets-cross-body. A chic structured shape is contrasted with a modern Italian solid brass lock, resulting in an eye-catching mix of classic and contemporary. Crafted in soft smooth, croc effect or snake effect leather, its removable strap allows for multiple styling options.

We think Meghan would love the clutch sizing for some of her more formal events – the bag is the perfect addition to be carried easily and stylishly by the Duchess en route to any number of royal functions. Meghan has chosen designers from the province of Quebec before too and it would be a cultural nod to her Commonwealth sisters.

If we’ve peaked your interest in DeMellier’s bags, our friends at DeMellier have been kind enough to once again share with us an exclusive gift code for Meghan’s Mirror readers through November 10, 2019 – perfect timing for holiday gifts (or to send to those searching for holiday gifts for yourselves)

I cannot get past the little green number the Duchess first used, against the black ensemble I just loved it. The perfect size, the colour is stunning, just enough handle grip. Classic bag

I have a DeMellier London handbag and cannot rave about the quality craftsmanship enough. I get complimented on it daily for the shape, color and size (it’s the mini copenhagan in yellow). If you have been considering one of their bags, I strongly support you purchasing one,. Mine was a gift from my MIL for my first day of work in my current position and I carry my bag daily. I truly, truly adore it.

Omg MM you’re killing me!! I want all of these lovely bags!! I admit handbags are one of my obsessions and these are quite stunning. I”m really quite taken with the Montreal Maxi but since I bought the John Lewis Smart Set tote and I don’t know if I can justify purchasing another tote. Mmmmm, I’m going to have to work on this! Can anyone here think of a reason why I would need another tote? I could use your help 🙂

    Ladies,
I don’t mean to be petty, just like facts.
The Duchess is not a Toronto native, she is not Canadian, she is an American, who was born and raised in California.
Sorry, we can’t give her to Canada, she’s a California girl!
    🙂
    I love this site!
