Today, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry attended a reception with delegates from the Commonwealth Youth Forum at the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre in London.
Meghan’s attendance at the event was quite unprecedented for a “soon-to-be” member of the Royal family, and it obviously shows the great confidence that Harry, and the rest of the Royal family, have in Meghan and shows the role that she will be undertaking in the family.
As part of the 2018 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry attended the Commonwealth Youth Forum Reception. The reception was an opportunity to meet with young people from around the commonwealth and learn more about their projects.
It was a notable event for Meghan Markle, as the CHOGM events are very high profile occasions for the royals. Meghan’s attendance shows her eagerness to join the royal family and to work with high-profile causes and occasions.
Meghan’s look was so chic! It was fresh, fun and mixed stripes like only a master fashionista could, and was a terrific Spring/Summer dress to embrace the warmer weather. We love how she decided to wear a dress to the event, and yet still managed to make it all her own.

Oooohhhh I love that dress! Wow!

It’s perfect for Spring & Summer, isn’t it??

Lovely spring look! I really like how she cleverly combined the thin stripes on the dress with the cross body bag with the thicker stripes, in the same color family. The jacket over the shoulders is a nice touch too.

Well, I don’t think the House of Windsor has ever had so much glamour arrive on its doorstep, certainly not since Princess Margaret’s day. I can’t believe how much Meghan is able to keep to her signature style while fulfilling a royal role — this outfit is just pitch perfect.
The dress manages to be conservative and on-trend at the same time, with that restrained pinstripe coupled with a double-breasted front, an unusual take on the sundress style. I love the way the front flap folds down, lapel-like, and the back straps are fastened with buttons with extra tags extending downwards, adding edge but staying classy.
The Camilla and Marc jacket is superb though unfortunately it’s bunched up awkwardly on Meghan’s shoulder over the cross-body bag. Wearing the jacket shrug-style means she gets to keep the bag with the dress but hasn’t shown it off to its best perhaps. The Orton bag is lovely and a terrific pick over the dress, but I’m not so sure about it poking out from under the jacket as then its bold stripes seem a detail too far.
And Meghan has such wonderful elegant ankles and feet I think she was born to wear those Tamara Mellon shoes with their sexy straps, they are simply sensational. Overall the look is a big win for me and I say hooray for bare legs and shoulders, very Meghan, anddiscreetly done.

Wow! I love this dress!! This is a dress that I would wear to almost any occasion and feel very comfortable and chic in. Actually I love each piece of this outfit and really, really want that purse!! Meghan has the fiercest shoe and purse game I’ve ever seen!! I do wonder though where she stores all her clothes, purses, shoes and coats? Nott Cott is a small-ish two bedroom cottage, so unless she’s taken over the second bedroom as a closet, where is she keeping stuff??
Warning rambling thoughts ahead….so I also frequent another Meghan blog (by an author who also has a Kate blog) and I’ve noticed that so many people there tend to confuse Meghan’s style with Kate’s style. It seems that they are waiting for Meghan to bring out the coat dresses, LK Bennett pumps and little clutch purses. While some of the comparisons aren’t super obvious, I can tell that Kate’s mode of dress is the mode they expect all royal women to adhere to. Sometimes while reading the comments there I find myself getting frustrated by the subtle and not so subtle comparisons and little digs about Meghan not dressing to “protocol”. Personally I love that Meghan and Kate have completely different tastes in clothes and accessories, something for everybody, but I don’t understand the desire to make Meghan into a Kate 2.0 (fashion wise). My one criticism of Meghan would be the constant flicking back of her bangs, especially on the left side. I’ve often find myself trying to reach through my computer screen and tuck the offending lock behind her ear!! Ok, ramble over…phew!
Thanks MM for a great post and all the wonderful posts between Meghan’s engagements.
Lauri says
gosh a whole big ramble and I forgot to mention how much I liked Harry’s clothes today, they coordinate nicely with Meghan’s without the matchy-matchy couples look, good on you Harry!

Hi Lauri!
I agree! I can’t STAND when I read other people comparing Meghan to Kate, they are COMPLETELY different women and I love that about them! I think that Meghan is definitely dressing within royal protocol, just with her own unique twist!

Thanks for a quality rant, Lauri! I’ve been caught up in folk who seem to be struggling with Meghan’s style today, seeing ‘messy’ where I’m simply seeing Sunshine State meets East Coast preppy. In short, I find Meghan’s style sophisticated in a global uber-chic kind of way, if that makes any sense. Kate has her own kind of beauty which she enhances in her own style. I’d hate to see Meghan losing her own individual style and character, and I see what she’s doing as part of bringing the royal family into a modern era. I think many of those so-called ‘rules’ belong to another time, and with Meghan joining Harry I think Team KP has a whole new dynamic going forward. Meghan seems to be testing boundaries which I find refreshing, though she is also acquiring more polish in her own way, I don’t think the likes of this dress-and-jacket combo wasn’t a big feature of her old life.

Perish the thought of Meghan dressing like Kate. Kate dresses in a way that is more appropriate for Camilla than someone her age. I love that Meghan is edgier and more willing to experiment with fashion while still being tasteful and appropriate. I hate the argument that because Kate is the wife of a future king that she has to dress matronly. There are plenty of queens, princesses, crown princesses, and consorts that wear more interesting clothing and haven’t brought down their respective monarchies (Charlene, the Swedish Royals, Maxima, Letizia, and Crown Princess Mary all come to mind).
The funny thing is I sort of think that maybe Kate doesn’t want to dress like that but she feels like she has to. She had really cute style when she and William were dating. I am hoping that Meghan will be a fashionable (and more youthful) influence on Kate, actually.

Very chic! Love that we are seeing her take a different fashion risk! This is a very unexpected, sexy and sophisticated look, particularly for a soon-to-be member of the Royal family. Bravo, Meghan! Nicely done!

I agree, nicely done! This look is elegant, yet fresh at the same time. I love how she takes the traditional and modernizes it.

I absolutely LOVE this outfit!! Meghan continues to bring it! I always and hoping for a little color especially for the Spring/Summer, but Meghan seems to really be staying true to her love of neutral colors! Harry and Meghan are fantastic! I love the similar dress options you posted MM, I’m going to buy the first one! I’m getting SOOO excited for the wedding, we are ONE month away tomorrow!!! EEK!

I am 90 percent on board with the outfit. I really like it while she is wearing the blazer but for some reason I find the straps kind of odd. With the buttons they remind me of overall straps. I think I would actually like it more if it were fashioned as a sleeveless dress…like fabric up to the shoulders but no sleeves. The fabric is great though…I love a good pinstripe.
And I love everything else…particularly the purse.

There’s nothing wrong with the outfit itself, the dress is smart Casual and it looks great on her, but I don’t think its very appropriate for the occasion. I would wear that for a lunch with friends in the Cote d’Azure, or maybe (just maybe) for the Wimbledon match in July…rather than in an official event in London. It seems as if she chooses the clothes according to what she likes and “the mood of the day” (although I’m sure she prepares her outfits way in advance) without considering the weather and/or the suitability of the item. One day she puts on a wool pullover and the day after a linen sleeve-less dress without tights! she’s definitely keeping the Californian vibes 🙂 nothing against that, but to me it looks awkward wearing those summery dresses in the freezing London. She’s not getting the Royal touch, if that’s what she intended 🙁
