Today, Meghan and Harry brought the glamour to the red carpet at the annual Royal Variety Performance. The variety show performance is a glittering annual event supporting the Royal Variety Charity, of which the Queen is Royal Patron.
Meghan wore a dramatic black mermaid skirt paired with a sequined top from Safiyaa. The look was unexpected yet glamorous, and perfectly suited the event.
Top: Safiyaa “Malaya” Strapless Top
Skirt: Bespoke black Safiyaa ‘Gayeta’ Fishtail Skirt
Earrings: Birks Snowstorm Earrings
Clutch: Black Unknown Glitter Box Clutch, possibly by Olga Berg
Shoes: Black Aquazzura ‘Simply Irresistible’ Pumps
Love Meghan’s look today? We asked the team to come up with some of their favourite #MirrorMeg options:
What did you think of Meghan’s ensemble for her first year at the Royal Variety Performance?
Danielle says
Gorgeous! Love how she always throws an elegant fashion curveball. The skirt and top is so unexpected but gorgeous, and probably especially flattering for her pregnancy looks. And I don’t know if anyone else is getting Fijian vibes from the leafy sequin textures, but it feels like a fun nod to their recent trip!

I also LOVE this look on Duchess Meghan! The top is gorgeous, and the long, mermaid skirt is so unexpected and yet just perfect.
In other pics, you can see that her baby Sussex bump is much bigger now, but the shape of the top is very nice in that you can’t see it that much from all angles.
Leave it to her to wear a black and white evening outfit that’s anything but boring! As for the hair, it’s perfect in the neat, low glossy bun with the Birks diamonds as an accent. Perfection!

Wow, just Wow!!! I think what I love about this outfit is how much it reflects Meghan and her personal style. While I also loved the gowns she wore on tour, I felt that they reflected more of how Meghan felt she should dress as opposed to how she would have liked to have dressed (I hope this makes sense). The only little change I might have made would be to the shoes, perhaps a sandal or maybe even a pop of color to peek out from under that gorgeous skirt.
I’m also so thrilled that she’s ignored the trend of wearing lace to formal events, so many royal women do that I’m completely tired of it.

I was thinking the same, a hot red open toe strappy sandlel needed ger. Love this look! This and odr bird dress, my favs.
Gigi says
It’s certainly a glamourous look, and I love the top! And her hair and accessories are perfect. But the whole look is undermined for me by the sheer impracticality of the skirt length. She can barely walk, and it’s dragging across the wet entrance, potentially ruining the bottom. It baffles me why she does not take the time to get clothing altered so it fits.
Lisa says
This is not my favorite look. Definitely a step down for the formal looks on the royal tour.
JessNess says
Totally agree. I am glad some readers on here can be objective and not just like a look because of who she is. I’m not a fan. All of her tour looks were better than this. This is very unflattering.
Pam says
Very appropriate for an evening formal affair, but I wish she would have left off the sash or belt that she has on. I think the line would have flowed better with it–it’s almost too high in the waistline in the pics above.
ali says
Not her best look. Her addition of the strap to the top makes it look like a bathing suit. Outfit looks more like summer than late Like the skirt but agree with others that it was too long for a rainy night in London.
Deborah A. Lorenzen says
I loved the bustier sans the belt and halter straps. I agree that it looks more summery than fall and the addition of the belt throws off the entire line of this lovely piece. The skirt is too long. Why Meghan doesn’t have her skirts and pants tailored but instead chooses to drag her hems is a mystery to me. I think this bustier would like great with a pair of sleek cropped trousers and strappy sandals.
Mel says
She looks gorgeous. The high belt is to a accommodate her “bump”. It would look more awkward if it placed on her waistline. The length of her skirt is suppose to drag as it is a mermaid skirt. Looking at the model above, that’s how it’s suppose to appear. May not be the best length of skirt to wear on a rainy night but overall she looks wonderful..
em moss says
The bottom of that skirt is all wet….
Lai Yin Yin says
It’s horrible. It looks like she decide to wear a bathing suit with peplum over a fish tail skirt
Heidi says
I think she looked lovely but I do wish that she’d left the top strapless. I loved the drama of the fishtail skirt.
Deborah A. Lorenzen says
Not only is the hem all wet in additional photos it appears that Harry was stepping on the skirt! A mid-length dress would have been more appropriate for the inclement weather.
Becks says
Yikes. This is a hard no for me. I agree the strap makes the top look like a swimsuit, and that combined with the sash reminds me of the early 00’s halter tops I wore in college. Pass. I’m disappointed. I was looking forward to her red carpet gown.
lawmom says
Looks like I’m in the minority (again!). I think this is bad. The top looks really stiff and uncomfortable, the sash is in a weird place (should have been higher, or support – if that’s why she’s wearing it – could have been built into the structure of the top since it’s bespoke). The top straps are tragic and make this look like a tankini. The skirt is far too long and photographs like a cheap fabric, which it’s obviously not. Her makeup and earrings look good though.
Deborah A. Lorenzen says
I agree with you if something doesn’t fit I don’t know why she wears it! MM’s clothes should fit like a glove, no pulling seams or dripping hems. I feel I am in the minority too. I did love the Oscar de la Renta frothy creation she wore in Australia.
AND says
Hated this whole look. Agree with everyone who said it looks like a tankini from middle school days. Not flattering at all. And I’m SO tired of this hair style. Like she was doing laundry, threw on a gown, and rushed out the door.
