Meghan's Mirror

Chronicling the Chic, Classic and Casual Style Duchess of Sussex (the former Meghan Markle)

September 5, 2019

5 South African Designers Meghan Would Love

The Sussexes are going on their first Royal Tour as a family of three – awww! – and we can’t wait to see them together! We are especially excited to see the Duchess of Sussex representing South African fashion. We’ve rounded up some of our favorite South African brands that we think Meghan will love!

Meghan Markle South African Designer Mantsho

Mantsho

Mantsho is a South African-based design label which emphasizes bold prints and edgy construction. The brand may sound familiar – they recently collaborated with H&M on a capsule collection that embodies the brand’s vibrant, beautiful, and cultural ethos.

Meghan Markle South African Designer Kisua

KISUA

KISUA is a capsule-collection based clothing brand focused on bringing African fashion to the masses. With distribution centers in Africa, America, and Europe, the pieces are accessible to every woman, showcasing traditional African patterns and design techniques. From the website: “Inspired by the sights, sounds and tastes of Africa, we blend traditional techniques and materials with a contemporary design aesthetic.”

Meghan Markle South African Designer Kirsten Goss

Kirsten Goss

Minimalist jewelry designer, Kirsten Goss, founded her label in London in 2002 before returning to her native South Africa to grow her brand. The jewelry line focuses on minimalist gold jewelry with a down-to-earth, wearable aesthetic. Kirsten Goss is prided on excellence in craftsmanship, “with the most seemingly insignificant aspects of every piece meticulously laboured until perfect.”

Meghan Markle South African Designer Thebe Magugu

Thebe Magugu

Thebe Magugu is one of the biggest fashion names hailing from South Africa, and the eponymous designer recently won the 2019 LVMH Prize, one of the high fashion industry awards. Speaking of his label and his design process, Magugu says, “”I come from a very rich culture: there’s a lot of beadwork, a lot of craft.” His creations have been lauded and showered with accolades since the label’s 2017 launch. The designer says the line “reflects a more authentic Africa, one that recognizes that we are forward-looking, open to the world.”

Meghan Markle South African Designer Edun

Edun

South African accessories, clothing, and homewares designer Edun is not only fit for a Duchess, but has already been approved by a Queen – Queen Bey, that is. Beyonce carried an Edun bag during a 2018 visit to Johannesburg. The brand is focused on creating a line “that celebrates and challenges ethical and sustainable fashion.”

We’d love to hear from you! What designers or styles do you think Meghan will wear on the Royal Tour South Africa?

As a South African, I think she will be super impressed with Jo Borkett for her minimalist, working woman designs and Thula Sindi for his cosmopolitan touch. If there are formal dinners on their itinerary then she’ll probably do Gavin Rajah, especially as he is Cape Town-based and the palace has informed the South African media that the duchess will spend the bulk of her trip in the Cape Town 🙂
