Royal watchers got a special Sunday surprise when we awoke to pictures of Meghan and Harry, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, attended the wedding of Celia McCorquodale. Celia is the daughter of Lady Sarah McCorquodale, who was Diana, Princess of Wales’ sister.
It was a beautiful day for a British society wedding, and as far as we know this is the first (of many!) British summer weddings where we will see Meghan. The dress code for these events tends to be a pretty dress with a hat or fascinator, so Meghan definitely followed all the “fashion rules” for this one.
Many noted that Meghan’s Oscar de la Renta dress was quite oversized. A quick look at the designer’s website shows that the dress is meant to be quite drapey and loose, creating a flowy and ethereal look.
Dress: Oscar de la Renta Chiffon Floral Dress
Shoes: Aquazzura Wedding Shoes
Fascinator: Marks & Spencer Pillbox Bow Fascinator
Clutch: Carolina Herrera Scala Insignia Clutch in White (Believed to be custom made for Meghan)
Earrings: TBC, believed to be Birks Opal Earrings
What did you think of Meghan’s first wedding guest look as a Duchess?
AnnaP says
The Duchess of Sussex looks perfect – I love the summery feel of this pretty dress. The colour is wonderful on her and the accessories suit beautifully. She doesn’t look swamped in it, it is floaty and fresh.
It was a wonderful surprise to see these pictures today – very happy to see the beautiful couple.
Lisa says
1. Love how the Duke and Duchess are matching.
2. The dress is fresh and summery. My only qualm is that it’s ‘over’ oversized on her.
OG SG says
I agree. I love the dress but it is not slouchy, it is just huge. Especially in the bodice. I understand that fitted is not her style but there is just so much extra fabric.
Emma says
Maybe she has something to hide under there….. :O 😀 *squeeel*
annmartina says
Although judging by the fitted Givenchy just a couple days earlier, probably not
Danielle says
Beautiful! The perfect summer wedding guest dress. Love how it fits and flows. She wears it wonderfully and they look so blissfully happy!

I was just wondering if we’d ever see the Duchess in a print dress and voila here it is!!! It’s almost like she’s been reading our minds lol. I really like this dress and I don’t think it’s too big at all. I’m glad to see that Meghan is retaining her own sense of style and continues to wear what is comfortable for her instead of bowing to the pressure of what the public wants. Personally I hope that the fashion industry starts to move more in this direction and away from the body-con looks currently in fashion. Lastly, I love how it looks like she just plopped this fasinator on her head and headed out the door, it brought a smile to my face!
Lisa says
You are sort of contradicting yourself – almost like she’s been reading our minds but then not bowing to public pressure.
Ps: The Duchess used to wear body con dresses herself.
Lauri says
Thanks for pointing that out Lisa

The Clutch is from Carolina Herrera , I think bespoke because I can’t find a version in white https://chcarolinaherrera.com/de/en/bags/must-haves-b680170/item/black-scala-insignia-clutch

Thanks for the tip, Laura!!!! Have added it to the blog post now. xo

I love the color and the pretty blue floral print of the dress. She doesn’t wear prints that often, so it’s a fresh look on her for summer. The color looks beautiful on her and matched up nicely with Harry”s ensemble,
I also love her facinator and the pretty updo (yes with the loose strands too!) 🙂
Now, as for the slightly slouchy, loose fit..,I think I know why she may need a little more room in the middle ( hint hint). Anybody else thinking what I’m thinking?
Val says
That’s interesting, but she didn’t need a little more room in the middle with the Givenchy dress she wore on the outing with the Queen.
Deborah Lorenzen says
Yep, that was a snug fit!
Amy Bee says
I love it. Ithe doesn’t photographwell but in the videos I’ve seen of her arrival, it looks really nice and you can see its floaty effect.
Lauri says
I agree it really looks best in motion

Everyone should take a risk with fashion now and then. This dress reminds me of the Erdem floral dress worn by another royal person: points for interest but overall not a win. I applaud that risk generally.
I do like the print and love flowy and relaxed vibes but this is actually so unflattering. You can barely find Meghan, it’s like this dress wanted to go to a wedding so it kidnapped her to make her take it there and it’s in charge. It’s all I can look at. Meghan is being worn by the dress. I think it would get a bad review on Project Runway, though at least one judge would say “well I like that I’ve never seen it before…” and that’s where I am today.
Some of the other dresses at the event look quite uncomfortable and overwrought. Struggles at the other end of the spectrum. Overall a poor fashion showing from Lincolnshire today.
ChiFashionista says
I totally agree! The dress is wearing her. Love the floral print, and that she wore a fascinator. But that is it. Would have rather seen the red low cut O de la R option with the fitted bodice and tiered hem. She tried the English Country Rose look, but alas, she is at heart a modern American. Floral prints can be successfully combined with a streamlined dress. Will await the next country cousin wedding….and cross my fingers!
OG SG says
Exactly. Kitty Spencer also wore a flower chiffon number. It was not tight but it clearly fit her. With the extra fabric in the sleeve and chest areas on Meghan, you can make a whole new dress…or at least a skirt. It also makes her look super flat chested, which she is not.
Ali says
Not her best look. I think the dress swamps her. Meghan may just be too petite for this look. Also, given that she doesn’t have a well defined waist, loose clothes like this dress are not ideal for her.
Deborah Lorenzen says
Ah no, dress is far too big and not flattering to her slim figure…it looks like a beach dress or maybe curtains at a beach house. Even if the dress was in solid color just too voluminous.
Lawmom says
The dress is lovely. While I applaud the flowing style, she needs a better tailor so it’s not so droopy around the middle/chest.
Karen says
Sigh. How can she go from total perfection in Chester to this? I’m assuming it looked much better in person, but it’s not flattering in photos. She is a royal now and the messy bun is simply messy. It does her no favors, but she will find her way just as Kate did. ( lots of hairspray and hairnets!) on the bright side she has had far more hits than misses . I look forward to Ladies Day. I’ll bet she knocks our socks off then.
Laura B. says
As much as I love Meghan’s style, this one was a total miss for me. The pictures don’t even look like her. The dress is swallowing her slender frame. Way too big….even for a dress that’s supposed to be flowy (compare to the pictures of the model’s torso…it’s HUGE). And this is the first time her messy bun approach fell flat in my opinion. Maybe it’s the messy dress / messy hair both at the same time. Anyway, I applaud the risk. She’s a smart and stylish lady……she’ll figure out what works on her and what doesn’t. Next Please!
Kate in Canada says
Agreed. I think one shouldn’t have too many “messy” elements in one go. The dress being loose (my opinion on loos for a wedding) should have had sleek hair and a less whimsical hat, perhaps a sturdier shoe. All of the elements would have been fine on their own, with appropriate matches, but together they just don’t work for me. The fascination would work with loose hair and a summer eyelet or lace dress, but not this shirt cut drapey dress. I have wondered since I saw the not so fitted wedding dress if Meghan was already pregnant. Early, but maybe there. This makes me wonder even more.
Stella Blu says
The dress is beautiful, but way to big for Meghan. The huge size of the top and the overlong sleeves make the dress look kind of frumpy and overpowering. It could have been stunning on her in the right size or with a bit of good tailoring. This is the first time I do not like what she is wearing. It looks like it’s borrowed from someone much larger.
Iris says
I absolutely LOVE this look on Meghan!!! She’s sticking to many style elements she’s comfortable with (relaxed fit, loose hair) but giving us a little something new, like the print and fascinator style. I think she looks incredible, you can’t take your eyes off Meghan!
SallyG says
Oh no!!! It reminded me of a summer dressing gown. Pretty but way TOO BIG! Apparently she nearly took a tumble but Harry held on tight.
SY says
I loved this look and thought it was appropriate for a summer wedding, however, from some angles, it does look a bit big on Meghan. Otherwise, it’s a home run in my books!
Julie says
I quite like this look. It brings a bit of casual-cool aesthetic to the usually quite formal dress-and-fascinator look.
However, one thing that has really been rubbing me the wrong way about Meghan’s style ever since her engagement is how extremely high-end everything she wears is. If memory serves, she has worn nothing but clothes from luxury fashion houses, many of them bespoke, for months. I hope she does a bit more affordable fashion in the future.
Michelle McClendon says
SMH….visceral reaction to sight of her bunching the dress while walking…..not sure how she could have added weights to keep it from blowing wide open…..I like the print- but I think it looks better on the image of a couch found by my colleague ( thx, L!)….
Cass says
Ugh, I can’t get behind this dress and fascinator. Shoes are nice.
The dress looks way too big on her frame and covers her lovely curves. The fascinator is oddly perched and doesn’t match other than in colour.
I truly hope we never see this one again. LOL onwards and upwards Meghan, you did great at Ascot.
Myriam says
There’s not all that extra fabric around the waist on the dress worn by the model. Megan should have tailored it the same. Her hair looks awful, in the picture where she’s by herself it doesn’t even look combed. Close to $6k for a dress worn to an afternoon wedding is too much. For a diplomatic dinner maybe, an afternoon wedding no.
