Meghan's Mirror

Chronicling the Chic, Classic and Casual Style Duchess of Sussex (the former Meghan Markle)

June 30, 2020

Meghan Markle’s Fashion & Interior Design Style

Meghan’s style captivated even the most casual of royal watchers when she appeared on the scene in 2016. But it wasn’t just her outfits on the streets of Toronto that grabbed attention; it was also her chic Toronto pad with its white marble, clean linens, and effortless appeal. When paying attention to those brief glimpses of her decor, it becomes clear that Meghan’s sense of fashion seamlessly translated into her interior design.

California Casual

The first images that come to mind when conjuring Meghan’s street style is likely her lightweight linen button-downs, her ripped denim, and comfy flats. Meghan slipped into these looks while being photographed in her pre-royal days and even while enjoying her down time in England. When it comes to California casual, Meghan is basically a walking master class.

California casual is also the major defining factor of her Toronto abode. Its look can be summed up by white linen couches, live-edge wood, rattan details, hand-spun ceramics, cozy throws, and the iconic tulip table. One glance at her old Instagram reveals these details and more, including a beachscape print from famed photographer Gray Malin.

Mixing High/Low

It was the maternity look heard around the world: the form-fitting H&M sheath Meghan wore to visit Mayhew in 2019 spoke volumes about her style. She regularly mixes budget pieces with brand names: J.Crew shirts and Oscar de la Renta ball gowns, Banana Republic staples contrasted with couture. Girls next door everywhere admire her high fashion while feeling like some of her style is actually attainable.

This extends to her decor. She housed multiple items from IKEA in her Toronto townhome (and proudly posted one trip on her Instagram!). Everyone from college students to thrifty young professionals has stormed IKEA’s warehouse for the company’s sleek, affordable picks. Royals—they really are just like us sometimes.

Artisanal Accents

During her time in England, Meghan was committed to small, ethically admirable brands. Knowing the “Markle Sparkle” effect would elevate these companies in the eyes of royal watchers, Meghan was keen to promote woman-owned businesses and brands that gave back.

Shopping small and shopping local have huge impacts, a mantra that Meghan carried on at home. In keeping with staples of California casual, artisanal pottery and pieces can be found throughout the two-story space. There’s even a live-edge console table that easily looks hand-made. It’s the most responsible decision to source these types of products locally when possible.

Unfussy and Unaffected

Many royals are famous for a tailored and touched-up style. Not so with Meghan. She’s never overdone; rather, she’s defined by her messy buns, denim ripped here and there, and atypical silhouettes. Notably, she doesn’t have a stylist (only rumored recommendations from her BFF Jessica Mulroney).

The emphasis, then, is entirely on her own style—this goes for her time at royal engagements and in her own home. Meghan’s townhouse had the effortless appeal of someone who didn’t use a professional to make everything perfect. The eclectic smattering of decor made it seem like the items were collected from trips around the globe. Perhaps Jessica had a say or two here, as well.

Brand Loyalty

It’s no secret that Meghan is loyal to her favorite designers. Some have even become close confidantes and partners, like Misha Nonoo or Roland Mouret. Meghan is proud to display pieces from her friends (hello, Serena Williams!) as well as designers she admired long before becoming royal, like Victoria Beckham.

The same ethos goes for pieces in her home. Time and again, she revisited favorites like West Elm and Tom Dixon when styling her chic space. Another favorite is Pamuk & Co., which sells Turkish cotton towels and throws. Even as an actress, Meghan was a powerful partner and influencer for these companies.

I miss seeing her in public and her clothing aesthetic, so this post was a real joy. Yes, joy.
Glad she got away from the madness, but miss that amazing time of her being a more public figure.
