A Royal Year in Review – Breaking Down Meghan’s Style in 2018

It’s been quite the 2018 for Meghan, hasn’t it? From starting the year off as Meghan Markle and ending it as Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Sussex – with a baby on the way – it’s been one for the royal record books. Believe it or not, it was only in 2018 that Meghan shut down her social media accounts even though it feels like years have passed since that time.

While we have our favourite looks from the year (scroll down to find out what they are), what we’re curious about is seeing what your favourite looks were. The Meghan’s Mirror Editorial team favourite looks of the year – excluding wedding gowns! – were two very different styles. Amanda liked the green ensemble Meghan wore while arriving in Ireland. Here’s why:

This look was the first chance we had an opportunity to visibly see Meghan’s sartorial diplomacy on stage. Turning to Clare Waight Keller for Givenchy, she looked chic and elegant in a pencil skirt and sweater, while also paying homage to British fashion by carrying a Strathberry tote. I loved the mix of business and style in a way that all working women could incorporate into their own wardrobes… And the jewelled green tone was a great nod to the Emerald Isles she was visiting.

Christine’s favourite was the stunning Oscar de la Renta dress from the Royal Tour of Australia. Here’s her thoughts:

Meghan’s true princess moment this past year came in October, when she stepped out in a stunning Oscar de la Renta gown. The tulle and embroidered confection featured dozens of seagulls crafted from velvet and sequins. The jagged cut of the fabric lent to a modern look, creating a dress that was princess-y without being twee. The monochromatic color palette of contrasting black and white stayed true to Meghan’s signature style. This gown showed that her new role as Duchess was not going to change who Meghan is: a modern royal representing a modern monarchy

    Thank you MM for such a wonderful post!! Wow, voting was much harder than I thought it would be, so many favorites in each category it was difficult to pick just one!

    The Duchess has certainly had a busy year! The list of engagements you provided, not including each individual event on tour, is quite impressive for a newly minted royal. I am thrilled with how well she’s taken to her new role and am inspired by how she’s coped with the negative press recently. I am finding myself inspired by her more and more and not just for her style but for the way she is living her life the way she wants to live it, with confidence, kindness and grace.

    Happy Holidays to the wonderful MM team and to everyone here who makes reading and commenting on this blog such a joy!! I pray that 2019 will be filled with blessings, laughter and love for all of you!

    There were many, many misses for me this year, but also a few pieces were I was like wow, I love that! My most loved was the cream cape Givenchy dress Meghan wore while with the Queen. When I saw that I thought, I hope I see more of this from Meghan. This is a dress for a Duchess. Unfortunately I don’t believe that will be the case, but I hope she wears it again at some point! Thank you for doing the poll! It’s fun to look back at all the fashion.

    Love the year in review and poll–it’s great fun to re-live the very eventful year Duchess Meghan had!
    Just a kind request: please work on keeping images to scale for the poll photos. Some photos were so distorted I couldn’t make them out! (holding the ‘shift’ key when re-sizing photos keeps them from getting so oddly distorted.)
    Other than that you do a great job!
